Chapter 639: The Wolf Who Spoke First

Lucian didn’t retaliate. He walked into the third hearing and presented the evidence as an addendum to his claim, demonstrating that the holding house fostered an environment hostile to the lawful inhabitants of the territory, and the addendum was so precisely worded and so devastatingly timed that it destroyed what was left of Halvoran’s credibility before their advocate opened his mouth.

The three wolves, the ones who were attacked in the capital, healed. The note was framed and hung in the Moon Kingdom’s council hall, because Lucian believed in remembering what people showed you about themselves when they thought they were winning.

Lucian renamed it.

The naming was deliberate. Argenvael was his parents’ kingdom. The name belonged to a Fae court that no longer existed, a history that was his but was no longer the future he was building. The wolves needed a name that was theirs. A name that said what they were and what they stood for and where they had come from in a single word.

He called it the Moon Kingdom. After his family. After the goddess who chose him. After the silver light that had been the first thing he saw through wolf eyes on a night when his body became the thing it was always supposed to be.

The mages came next. Lucian welcomed them with the same words he used for every arrival: You are welcome here and the here is permanent.

More Fae followed. Slowly. Cautiously. Fae who were curious about the wolf kingdom, Fae who had intermarried with wolves, Fae whose children carried gold eyes and needed a place where gold eyes were normal rather than alarming. They came and Lucian received them and the kingdom absorbed them the way healthy kingdoms absorb new citizens, with structure and patience and the understanding that integration was a process measured in years rather than days.

The wolves were the foundation. The mages were the infrastructure. The Fae were the architecture. The combination produced a kingdom that no other territory on the continent could replicate because no other territory on the continent had a king who was all three things simultaneously.

Fin watched Lucian Moon build the prototype of Shadowclaw ten thousand years before Shadowclaw had a name, and the watching confirmed something he had always known and never been able to prove: that the kingdom he’d built in this life was a memory. A blueprint his soul had been carrying since a boy stood in the ruins of his parents’ home and decided to build something better on top of it.

AELINDRIS — A FEW YEARS LATER

A few years had passed since academy and since Lucian had become King of Wolves.

Lucian Moon returned to Aelindris, walking through the eastern gate of the palace he’d grown up in. The arriving produced a dissonance that was physical. The corridors were the same. The marble was the same. The sconces and the gardens and the library where he’d sat with a girl and said nothing were the same. He was different.

The boy who had left this palace had returned as a king, and the king was wearing the weight of a crown and a pack and a kingdom on shoulders that had broadened enough to hold all three and still have room for the thing he’d been carrying since he was fourteen.

He found Tristan in the corridor outside the ceremonial hall.

Tristan was pacing. The pacing was unnecessary, because the prince had been ready for six hours, but his body required movement the way his mouth required words, and both were operating at capacity.

Lucian leaned against the pillar. Watched.

"You are going to wear a trench in the floor," Lucian said.

"The floor can handle it."

The exchange was a decade of friendship compressed into four sentences. The rhythm was automatic. The comfort was structural. Two men whose shorthand had been refined over years of proximity and whose proximity had produced a language that required zero setup and zero explanation. 𝑓𝑟ℯ𝘦𝓌𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝑐ℴ𝓂
