Chapter 650: The Bride Knows The Body Count

Fin was watching a past life unfold and had zero ability to intervene and maximum ability to have opinions, and the opinions were loud and getting louder.

River’s grief intensified but the resolve underneath it didn’t waver. The combination was wrong, the emotional equivalent of a woman crying at a funeral she’d already attended, mourning losses that hadn’t occurred yet, grieving a future she was actively working to prevent.

River knew something. Lucian could feel it through the matebond the way you feel a change in pressure before a storm, and the storm was already inside her, and she was walking into it on purpose.

What is she about to do?

The thought crystallized inside Lucian with a clarity that startled him. He couldn’t explain it. He didn’t have the data to support it. But the matebond was carrying a transmission from River that was too layered, too heavy, too informed for a woman reacting to a surprise, and the wolf inside his chest, which had been screaming mate for the last five minutes, went quiet for the first time since the scent hit him.

Quiet. Watchful. A predator recognizing that someone else was hunting in the same territory and the hunt was already in progress.

She knew something and was going to do something about it whatever it was.

Her pink Fae magic carried her grief outward. The pulse moved through the courtyard in every direction at once, without permission, without control.

It hit Lucian through two channels simultaneously: through the air, the way it hit every Fae in attendance, and through the matebond, at full amplitude, unfiltered, carrying the exact frequency of a woman who had lost everything and was standing in a courtyard surrounded by everyone she loved and all of them were alive and the grief was still there.

The magnitude was wrong. Lucian knew it.

A bonding ceremony interruption, however devastating, could never produce grief this heavy. This was the grief of a woman who had held a dead man’s face in her hands. This was the grief of a woman who had watched a king fall. This was grief that had been earned on a field, and the field hadn’t happened yet, and River was carrying it anyway.

The deja vu hit him a third time. The sensation lasted half a second and vanished, leaving nothing behind except a faint ache in his chest that had no medical explanation and every metaphysical one.

River’s grief hit Tristan like a bucket of cold water thrown at a man who’d been sleepwalking. It hit him with enough force to override the freeze that Vesper’s arrival had induced. He snapped back so hard his entire body jolted, and the jolting was the first sign that Tristan Aelindor was still in there underneath whatever Vesper had done to his wiring.

"No, no. You do not need to be sad. You hear me?" Tristan said. "Whatever she said, whatever this is, you do not need to be sad."

Tristan turned. Green eyes cold. "Arrest her."

Four ceremonial guards moved from the pillars. Measured strides. Professional gait. The particular walk of soldiers executing an order at an event where the worst-case scenario was supposed to be a champagne shortage.

She knows what happens if she doesn’t do this.
