Chapter 663: Apologize Like You Mean It

Three visiting nobles. Fourteen courtiers. Atlas at the head. Tristan across the table. Vesper beside him, occupying a chair that carried the weight of protocol and the stench of politics.

Vesper addressed River as "the prince’s former companion."

The words crossed the table and landed on River the way all of Vesper’s cruelties landed: silently, absorbed without retaliation, processed behind a composure so practiced it had become architecture.

Through the matebond: pain. The specific pain of a woman being erased in public, her title stripped, her identity reduced to a footnote by a woman sitting in the chair that should have been hers.

Lucian felt it hit his chest and stay there.

His hand, which had been reaching for his wine glass, stopped mid-motion. The stop was brief. He completed the reach. He drank. He set the glass down. Every motion was controlled, measured, the performance of a man who was absolutely fine and whose composure was absolutely intact and whose wolf was absolutely, screaming-level furious behind the composure’s rapidly thinning walls.

Tristan set his fork down. The sound it made against the plate was quiet. The silence that followed was a weapon.

"Vesper."

One word. Full table volume.

Lucian watched Tristan dismantle Vesper with the cold efficiency of a man who had been trained by a king and loved by a woman and had decided that the training and the loving were both going to be applied to this moment with maximum force.

"Stand up. I will not repeat myself."

"The woman you just referred to as my ’former companion’ is Princess River Aelindor. She is a crowned member of this house, adopted by the King of All Fae, ratified by this court, and protected by every law this kingdom has written."

The control was worse than volume. Lucian recognized the technique because he used it himself. The drop. The register that preceded consequences. The temperature where fury stopped being hot and became cold and the cold was the part that left scars.

"You will address her by her title. You will address her with respect. And you will do both right now, in front of every person at this table, because the apology you are about to deliver will be as public as the insult you just made."

"I don’t think that’s—"

"I wasn’t asking what you think. I was telling you what you are going to do. Apologize. By name. By title. Now."

Vesper turned to River. "I apologize, Princess River, for my choice of words. It was thoughtless."

"It was deliberate," Tristan corrected. "Try again."

Lucian’s mouth did not twitch this time. There was nothing funny about the scene. There was only the cold, grinding satisfaction of watching his brother defend his mate with the full weight of a title and a fury that matched Lucian’s own.

The satisfaction was complicated. Because the man defending River was the man who should be defending her. The right man. The chosen man. The man whose job this was and whose job Lucian could never take without destroying the friendship that had survived everything else.

The second apology came through Vesper’s clenched teeth. "I apologize, Princess River, for deliberately disrespecting your title and your position."
