Chapter 103
“I know!” Poppy shot her hand up like she was in class. “Cola caught the fish, and he wouldn’t let anyone eat it.”
Wait, what?
Nicole blinked, completely thrown. The dog was adorable. Since when did he get bossy?
“Woof!” Cola tugged at her sleeve and dragged her toward the table.
A huge bowl of crispy fried fish sat there, golden and fragrant enough to make anyone’s mouth water.
Cola stood up with his front paws on the table and shoved the whole bowl toward her.
Eat, human!
Nicole glanced at Beatrice and the others, confused.
They hadn’t had it easy, either. After salting the fish, they waited and waited for Nicole to come back.
Eventually, they figured they couldn’t rely on her for everything. The three of them put their heads together and somehow managed to fry up the fish.
And then Cola went full guard-dog mode. He locked onto the fried fish like a predator, refusing to let anyone else come near it.
He was drooling, but still refused to let anyone touch it.
The 18th floor was pretty fair about things. Cola had caught the fish, after all. And now, he was basically maxed out in survival skills. No one wanted to get on his bad side.
No matter how hungry they were, they held back.
Jeremy looked like he was about to cry. “Hurry up and eat already! We’re starving over here.”
Nicole couldn’t help laughing. “Wow. Cola, you’re amazing. You even know how to take care of me now.”
“Woof!”
His eyes lit up, as if he was saying, “I’ve got you, human!”
Nicole picked up a piece and took a bite. It was crispy, fresh, and perfect.
Not bad. Hughie’s group had finally gotten the hang of it.
She glanced at the overly intelligent Cola, and a playful idea popped into her head. “Okay, I’ve eaten. Who’s next?”
“Woof! Woof!” Cola wagged his tail so hard that his whole body shook, drool dripping from his mouth.
Nicole got it. She dropped a piece into his bowl. “And after that?”

Cola grabbed Poppy’s pant leg.
One by one, he handed it out. Beatrice, Jeremy, and Hughie got their turn.
Zeph was last.
Cola seemed very pleased with his system and dug in happily.
Zeph, who was last in line, was speechless. He could accept being next to Nicole. Dogs liked kids, too, so that was fine. But he was the one who trained Cola. He had been strict, but every completed task
came with a reward.
And somehow… He had ended up as the dog’s least favorite person.
Zeph stared at life for a second, genuinely questioning things.
Everyone burst out laughing. Beatrice brought out a pot of spaghetti, and they all dug in.
After they settled plans for the next day, yawning their way through the discussion, everyone headed back to their own places.
Still riding the high of Cola loyalty, Nicole was in a great mood. She pulled out two smart bathtubs filled with hot water, sprinkled in dried rose petals, turned on some soft music, and leaned back with her eyes closed, soaking it all in.
