Chapter 102
The place had been torn apart. No surprise there.
Victor’s expression tightened as soon as he saw it. He headed straight for the eighth-floor supply room.
The door had been pried open, and everything inside was scattered across the floor in a mess.
He clicked on a flashlight and started picking through it, one piece at a time.
Research materials weren’t like everyday supplies. To the people who worked here, every tiny component mattered. To most survivors, though, they were useless. They weren’t food.
The place had been ransacked, but there wasn’t much anyone could actually take.
Victor sorted through the debris, gathering a pile of parts onto a table before pulling out his tools and getting to work. “Still missing a few things. I’ll strip them from the labs.”
There were several labs. He moved from room to room, dismantling pieces from machines and equipment. “This stuff used to cost a fortune. Shame most of it got wrecked by the flood.”
He wasn’t the type to show much emotion, but something in his voice gave him away.
Yeah. The flood hadn’t just taken lives. It had swallowed pieces of civilization right along with them.
Nicole didn’t understand the technical side, and standing there wasn’t helping. “I’ll look around. See if there’s anything useful.”
It was pitch-black. Zeph started to follow her, but Victor called out, “Give me a hand. I need to tweak this frequency converter.”
Nicole headed upstairs on her own.
Desks, door frames, and anything else that could be burned for fuel had already been stripped out. Empty shipping boxes were scattered everywhere.
She found a few plastic planting pots and tossed them into her storage without hesitation.
Computers from the research rooms and equipment from the labs all held valuable data. She might not need it now, but someone might someday. Anyway, it didn’t take up any space.
Floor by floor, she picked up “trash” others had left behind. She even took the strange prototype displays from the exhibition room.
Most of it was so far removed from everyday life that she couldn’t even tell what she was looking at. By the time she got back to the eighth floor, Victor had already assembled several components.
He had found some kind of casing from who knew where. It looked a bit like a frequency transformer. He pulled out more parts from his backpack, which he had brought from home, tinkering for another two hours before finally finishing the build.

The machine buzzed to life.
The sound made Nicole wince. She covered her ears and stepped back.
Victor explained, “The water’s too deep, so I boosted the frequency and range. It can cover about 100 feet. It’s harmless to people, but fish won’t be able to take it. They’ll flip over and float up.”
The only downside was the power drain. It could run for maybe three or four hours before the battery was completely dead.
With the device finished, Victor looked up. “So where are we fishing?”
“You’ll find out tomorrow.”
“Is there a lot of fish?” Victor hesitated, then added, “If you need more hands, my parents can help.”
Supplies were almost impossible to find now, but he knew the people on the 18th floor had their ways. The more he put in, the more he would get back. No one could guarantee how many fish there would be.
Tomorrow, some people would have to stay behind. With that much floodwater, plenty of fish had been swept out. They would need all the help they could get.
