Chapter 107
Nicole kept her distance, cool and unreadable.
Lydia took the hint and didn’t push. “Alright, I’ll fry yours first. No point overcooking it.”
As it turned out, Lydia really knew what she was doing. The fish came out crisp on the outside but tender inside, rich and savory.
The smell alone had Cola trotting over, tail wagging like crazy.
Nicole tossed him a few pieces, then nodded at Lydia. “Eat first.”
There were plenty of fish. Lydia ate the equivalent of two whole fish before the edge of her hunger finally
eased.
She closed her eyes for a second, savoring it.
It had been ages since she had felt full. It tasted so good that she could’ve licked the plate clean.
She couldn’t help but feel that the people on the 18th floor really knew how to survive.
Lydia worked even harder after that, hoping maybe they would take her family along in the future.
They went through about eight batches before the sound of the motorboat carried in.
Zeph and the others were back, bringing oil, salt, and a few extra seasonings.
Jeremy looked energized. He was practically glowing. “We landed another deal.”
After trading with Weasel’s crew earlier, they had realized sitting on this much fish wasn’t smart. It would go bad sooner or later. They needed another outlet.

There was no entry fee, but no trouble was allowed either. Anyone causing serious problems would be dealt with on the spot.
The place was packed. There were people everywhere, trading whatever they could.
Actual food was rare. Most of what people brought were leftover items, such as clothes, shoes, bikes, and kitchen tools.
And every single person was looking for food.
With that kind of crowd, they didn’t dare pull out the fish right away. They had to feel things out first.
Jeremy was the only one with an eye for this. The others weren’t built for it.

Derek and Victor were tech guys through and through. Zeph had law enforcement instincts. None of them were great at spotting safe trade partners in a chaotic crowd. One wrong pick, and they could end up in serious trouble.
There were plenty of people looking to trade.
There were also plenty looking to take without paying. They blended into the crowd, quietly scouting for easy targets.
So the three of them waited off to the side while Jeremy went in alone to scout.
Half an hour later, he came back with two men in worn, ragged clothes.
Derek took one look and froze. It was his old coworker.
“Gordon? You’re alive?”
“Derek? You made it, too?”
They stared at each other, stunned, eyes going red.
Out of everyone, they had run into each other here.
But this wasn’t the old world anymore. Even with that connection, Zeph and the others didn’t relax for a
