The Apocalypse Survival Manual (Three Days Before Doomsday, I Stockpiled Billions) novel Chapter 108

Chapter 108

Derek shot his old coworker a look, annoyed. “Gordon, you’ve really changed. What happened to your conscience?”

Gordon gave a helpless sigh, his voice rough. “What can I say? This mess changed all of us.”

On the surface, trading three pounds of raw fish for one pound of dog food sounded like a terrible deal.

In truth, it really wasn’t.

Dog food kept you full longer, and it stored well if sealed tightly. Fish, on the other hand, would start to stink if you didn’t deal with it within a couple of days.

Jeremy pulled out half a bag. “We’ve tried it. Honestly, it’s not bad.”

Nicole didn’t even consider it. She waved Cola over instead.

Cola looked like he had opinions about it, but since it was coming straight from her hand, he ate it

anyway.

The packaging was solid, and it was probably loaded with preservatives, since the shelf life somehow stretched to three years.

When Lydia heard about the dog food, her eyes lit up.

If they traded for enough, her family could stretch it for a long time.

Everyone wanted in.

Nicole was interested, too, especially after hearing they also had freeze-dried pet food cans. Her dog deserved the best.

They all agreed to trade raw fish for dog food.

The two sides circled each other a bit, testing limits, both knowing the other had a serious supply.

In the end, they settled on trading 1,500 pounds of raw fish for 500 pounds of dog food.

That would leave them with much less fish on hand.

But the reservoir was still full. They could always go back.

They packed up quickly, hiding the stove and supplies again.

They ate the last of the crispy fried fish, then split up what remained.

Nicole pulled Zeph and Jeremy aside. “The Goodmans put in real work. How do we split this?”

They weren’t part of the 18th-floor group. Derek and Lydia had only done grunt work, but the fishing device had been built by Victor. Without him, none of this would’ve happened.

Jeremy thought it through fast. “Give them one and a half shares. One for Victor, half split between his

parents.”

Too little would be unfair. Too much would cause problems later.

Nicole nodded. “One and a half it is.”

There was no point dragging things out. It was better to be clear.

When the Goodmans heard, their tension broke instantly. They had been bracing for less. This was more than they had hoped for. They were trading out 1,500 pounds anyway. They figured they might as well

bring everything along.

Under the cover of darkness, the motorboat pulled the raft through the floodwater.

They had agreed to meet in a quiet stretch near the outskirts of the city.

Even though Gordan was there, no one let their guard down. Nicole reminded everyone to put on life vests and keep their weapons hidden.

As they approached, Cola let out a low, alert bark.

Nicole swept a high-powered flashlight across the water. Sure enough, a motorboat and a few rafts were waiting in the distance.
