Chapter 115

Nicole slept in and didn’t even make it to breakfast before Beatrice knocked on her door.
“Nicole, what are you doing with your fish?”
Nicole answered casually, “I’m thinking about curing it. I’ll check with Gabrielle’s family later.”
Hughie’s group had ended up with two shares, which were way more than they could eat. They were planning to take half of it to the market at the department store and trade for other supplies.
Nicole wasn’t interested. “I’m taking Cola back to the hillside villa, see if he can catch a rabbit or something.”
The reservoir was too dangerous now. And after the past couple of days, Jeremy and Hughie were wiped out. No one wanted to go back there.
So they knocked on Zeph’s door instead. He agreed to go to the market, but mostly to take Poppy along and let her see what the world had turned into.
Which left Beatrice stuck at home again.
She didn’t even have time to complain before Gabrielle came up and knocked, asking quietly if anyone from the 18th floor wanted to go dig wild arrowroot.
The Goodmans had already benefited a lot by tagging along with them, but no one ever thought they had enough supplies.
They got lucky this time, but they might not get another chance.
Wild arrowroot roots could get as thick as tree limbs. Ten pounds of root might only yield one pound of
starch.
Digging it out was exhausting, and processing it into usable flour was even worse.
Arrowroot powder was supposed to be good for your skin, but the texture was like bland mush, and it didn’t fill you up at all.
The 18th-floor group, with food already on hand, had zero interest.
In the end, the Goodmans went on their own.
After breakfast, Nicole set out with Cola.
They took the motorboat back toward the reservoir, then went ashore and climbed toward another ridge.
On the other side was a dense bamboo grove Nicole had spotted two days ago through binoculars.
Bamboo produces winter shoots, and this just happened to be the right season.
Nicole climbed over the slope and stopped. A whole stretch of bamboo spread out in front of her. The

ground was cracked where shoots had pushed through, some already poking out of the soil.
Awesome!
Nicole pulled out her binoculars and scanned the area. Once she was sure no one was around, she took a hoe out of her storage space and reminded Cola to keep watch.
She swung the hoe, digging, prying, and cutting the shoots free. They were incredibly fresh, each one weighing three to four pounds with the shell still on.
She kept digging and digging.
At one point, Cola tried to “help,” pawing at the ground.
“Back off. You’ll end up chopping your paws.”
Cola didn’t listen, sticking close to her.
Nicole put on a stern face. “Don’t make me smack you!”
That finally worked. The dog slunk off, ears drooping, and went back to standing watch.
Not long after, he suddenly bolted.
That was just how a Malinois was, always itching for action, whether it was fighting, chasing, or hunting. These dogs could never stay still.
Ten minutes later, he came back with something bloody in his mouth.
It was a plump wild rabbit, torn open with several bite marks. He must’ve gone in hard.
Nicole rinsed it clean, shook off the water, and tossed it into her storage space, then threw him a couple
of wild boar bones to chew on.
Nicole didn’t slack off. She grabbed the hoe and got right back to work. By the time she was done, she had cleared out the entire bamboo grove.
She had dug up hundreds of pounds of shoots. Her mouth watered just thinking about all the different
kinds of dishes she could make with it.
