Zeph stood there, his expression unreadable as he stared out at the falling water level.

Two hours later, the surface finally calmed. The reservoir had dropped by more than 30 feet.

Hughie climbed up a tree and raised his binoculars. “Damn, the reservoir’s connected to the outside now.

Zeph made his way up to higher ground, scanning the surrounding ridges and slopes.

“The breach is on the lower side,” he said. “The water’s following the terrain, winding around the hills and feeding into the main road out there.”

Nicole thought it over. “So… We could just follow the current out instead of hauling everything over the mountains?”

In theory, yes.

Carrying over 3,000 pounds of fish across rough terrain would’ve crushed them.

They decided to try it.

The slope was manageable. Working together, they pushed the motorboat back into the water and eased

it into the current.

About 15 minutes later, they reached the break in the reservoir.

There was a massive tear in the dam, easily 150 feet across. The sky had turned heavy and dark. Visibility dropped fast.

Nicole kept scanning the area, finding no sign of the group from earlier. Maybe they had been swept away. Maybe a few had made it out and left.

Either way, she hadn’t seen it happen.

They reached the meeting point early. The current slowed here, so they tied the boat to a tree and shut off the lights.

They sat in silence, resting.

About an hour later, faint lights appeared in the distance.

Cola stiffened. “Woof!”

Nicole pressed a hand over his mouth and lifted the night-vision binoculars.

The darkness made it hard to see clearly, but she spotted Gordon. The number of people was the same

as last night. The supplies on their boat were covered with waterproof tarps.

They waited another 15 minutes. There was no sign of anyone trailing them.

Nicole switched on a high-powered flashlight and swept it in a slow circle five times, signaling them to come over and trade.

Gordon had been starting to think they had bailed. Seeing that, he let out a breath.

If this had been a setup…

Gordon had assumed they weren’t coming. He hadn’t expected them to be this cautious. If they had gotten robbed… 1

The thought vanished as last night’s dishes came to mind: grilled fish, fish stew, crispy fried fillets…

After months of living on dog food, their mouths watered uncontrollably. They fired up the motorboat and rushed over.

One pound of dog food for three pounds of fish was a steal. After all, they had stockpiled over 30 thousand pounds of dog food, plus hundreds of boxes of canned pet food.

Quite a few residents had already asked if they could get more fish, planning to store them and alternate

with the dog food.

The moment Gordon saw the bags on their motorboat, the last of his worries disappeared.

The trade went smoothly. They exchanged 3,000 pounds of fish for 1,000 pounds of dog food. Nicole’s group kept a little over 200 pounds for themselves. There wouldn’t be any more fish to catch after this,

after all.

“Derek, we don’t need more for the next couple of days. I’ll reach out again later.”

Each household would get a decent share, enough to last a few days. There was no need to gorge all at

once.

Derek thought about how close they had come to dying for those fish. Even if Gordon wanted more, there was no way they could get any now.

“Alright. Just let us know if you need anything.”

You never really know what people are thinking.

If Gordon realized this was the last trade, he might try to take everything by force.

Once Gordon left, Nicole and the others started dividing up the goods.

The Goodmans still got a one-to-five share, both for the dog food and the fresh fish. Nicole ended up with nearly 200 pounds of dog food and 8 fish.
