Chapter 142
Gabrielle was getting old. Her heart couldn’t take much shock. Besides, the guy next door wasn’t the only one in the building losing his mind.
She made the call and moved to the 17th floor. There had been killing on the 18th floor, too, but that was self-defense. Compared to the rest, their mindset was on a completely different level.
The two families didn’t just move their belongings upstairs. They also removed their stainless steel doors, planning to copy the 18th floor’s setup and turn the stairwell into a fortress with three additional
doors.
But they didn’t have the tools, so they knocked on the 18th floor to borrow some.
Nicole didn’t answer right away. She glanced at Zeph and Jeremy instead. There were tools in her storage space, but those couldn’t be taken out.
Zeph had a handheld impact drill. Hughie’s group had acetylene for welding.
Still, people were complicated. Now that they had chosen to move to the 17th floor, it was obvious they were looking for protection.
If Nicole’s group offered help too freely, it would only make them dependent.
The 18th floor wasn’t anyone’s savior. Protecting themselves was already hard enough, let alone protecting others.
Still, adding three more doors to the stairwell would benefit them, too. If someone rushed in, it would at least buy them time.
But they had to keep some distance from the 17th floor.
A few exchanged looks, and the 18th floor quickly reached an understanding.
“The drill’s almost out of power, and we don’t have much acetylene left,” Nicole said. “We can lend them, but when are you planning to return them?”
Her words left the other two families speechless.
Gabrielle caught on. “Young lady, we’re neighbors. We should be helping each other. These tools are a bit special. If we borrow them, we might not be able to return them right away. How about we trade something else as collateral?”
“Fine. You can work it out.”
In the end, Gabrielle offered a bracelet. The family with the kid handed over an antique ornament. The former residents of 1703 gave up a gold necklace.
Nicole accepted them on behalf of the 18th floor, then handed over the drill and acetylene to the 17th floor. She even sent Hughie and Jeremy over to guide them, making sure the doors were installed solidly.

The 17th floor also made another request. They wanted access to the rooftop to collect ice and snow for
water.
The rooftop was shared space. With the two floors now working together, refusing outright didn’t feel right. Every trip up would mean opening the door, though, which brought risk to the 18th floor.
Nicole thought it over. “Every day at 4 p.m. Only one person is allowed up at a time. You decide who.”
Only one person?
The 17th floor wasn’t happy about it, but the 18th floor held the advantage. After some discussion, they assigned Victor to the task.
Once the stairwell doors were installed, Hughie came back with three keys. “Getting in and out’s going to be a pain now. Six layers to pass through.”
The 17th floor also gave them a skateboard. Hughie decided to use the three pounds of nails he had and weld them onto the doors for extra security.
At the same time, the Goodmans made plans to go out and gather firewood the next day. In this deep freeze, you couldn’t stay indoors without fuel for heat.
They had collected a fair amount before, but burning fires all day meant it ran out fast.
