The rice was a mix of new grains and broken bits. To prevent people from claiming more than their share, everyone had to line up in person with their ID.
The scene was chaotic, but armed police stood guard with loaded guns, so no one dared cause trouble at the distribution point. If they stepped too far away, things could get dangerous fast.
Pickpockets were back. Bag slashers were everywhere. Some just grabbed and ran.
People would do anything to get a little more food. The group ahead of Beatrice had carried out their 80- year-old mother, wrapped tight in layers of blankets, completely covered.
Right before their turn came, the old woman died.
Her family started wailing on the spot, accusing the government’s policy of causing her death, saying it killed a long-lived elder in their home.
They made a huge scene, drawing a crowd. People muttered about how heartless the government was, even backing them up and demanding compensation.
A volunteer handing out supplies stepped forward and pulled back the blankets to check. The body was already stiff.
“Sorry, I used to work in a hospital. She didn’t just pass. It’s been at least 24 hours.”
They weren’t about to let that kind of behavior slide. The troublemakers immediately lost their right to
collect food.
They opened their mouths to keep arguing, but froze when they found themselves staring down the barrel of a gun.
This wasn’t peacetime. The police would actually shoot.
Hughie warned Nicole, “There are pickpockets and robbers everywhere now. Once you get your food, hide it well. Don’t let anyone get close.”
There were already people like that near the entrance to the complex. They just didn’t dare approach him and Jeremy because they were armed.
Nicole nodded. After changing clothes, she tried to leave Cola with Hughie, but he clamped onto her pant leg and refused to let go, determined to go out.
“No. Everyone out there is eyeing dog meat.”
When the dog heard that he couldn’t go, his bright eyes dimmed, and he lowered his head in silence. Nicole crouched down and patted his head to comfort him.
Poppy opened the door and ran out excitedly. “Let’s go, Nicole!”
Nicole frowned and looked at Zeph. “You’re taking Poppy out?”

“Yeah. Let her see the outside world.”
Fair enough. Experience mattered. People had to grow up, especially in times like this. Otherwise, the outcome wouldn’t be good.
Nicole didn’t argue, but Cola’s eyes lit up.
If even the little one could go, why couldn’t he?
In the end, worried he might cause trouble, Nicole had no choice but to tie a rope to him.
A dog like him loved freedom. Being leashed felt humiliating, but Cola endured it. After all, the one holding the leash was his human.
Nicole took the dog, and Zeph took his sister. Together, they headed downstairs toward the distribution site. It wasn’t far, about half a mile, but the ice made the journey slow. 1
Nicole’s concerns weren’t unfounded. Before leaving, she had even taken off Cola’s fur coat, but he still drew everyone’s attention.
It wasn’t that people hadn’t seen dogs before. They just hadn’t seen one this strong and sleek, standing tall with an imposing presence.
