For a moment, plenty of people were tempted, but not a single one dared make a move.

Poppy rarely got to come outside, and she was over the moon. Holding Zeph’s hand with one side and Nicole’s with the other, she skipped along, completely ignoring the biting cold, grinning the whole way.

Most residents came early in the morning to collect food, so by the time Nicole and Zeph arrived, the line wasn’t too long.

It took less than 20 minutes before it was their turn. They had to fill in their ID and address, verify their identity, and bring their own bags for the grain.

Nicole used a flour sack. One pound of grain really wasn’t much.

Seeing that both the trainer and Poppy got theirs, Cola looked around and started getting anxious. “Whine

… whine…”

He had stood in line, too. Why didn’t he get anything?

Nicole couldn’t help laughing. “You’re a dog. There’s no relief food for you.”

Why not?

Cola bristled, glaring fiercely at the volunteer as if he had been personally wronged.

The volunteers melted at the sight of such a handsome dog. In times like this, seeing one so well-kept

felt unreal.

It wasn’t just them. Even the police maintaining order kept glancing over. They used to have a dog in their unit, too. Unfortunately, it was gone now.

Maybe that was the charm of dogs. People were drawn to them without thinking.

After collecting their shares, each of them carried a bag and started heading back.

Seeing Poppy holding hers, Cola, feeling unfairly treated, insisted on carrying one, too. Not wanting him to sulk, Nicole handed him her bag.

With the sack in his mouth, his mood improved instantly as he trotted alongside Poppy.

“Woof!”

As they walked, two kids who had been playing on the ice suddenly rushed at Poppy, snatched the bag. from her hands, and ran.

Poppy was shoved down, hitting the ice hard.

Cola reacted instantly, leaping at the kid carrying the bag.

The child was knocked over, and the bag dropped to the ground.

Poppy didn’t cry. She scrambled up, ran over, and pinned the kid down, swinging her fists.

How dare they take her stuff!

She hurled one punch, then another, straight to the face. The kid wailed in pain. 1

Cola grabbed the other kid’s pant leg, holding him in place, as if he was saying, “Don’t forget this one! Hit him, too!” 2

Thinking of Zeph’s words, Poppy got even angrier and didn’t hold back at all.

With Cola helping, she beat them soundly and grabbed her bag back, cheeks flushed with anger. “Try that again, and I’ll beat you to death!”

Zeph watched the whole thing and didn’t step in.

Nicole couldn’t help laughing. No wonder he brought Poppy out. This was basically a setup.

“What are you doing?” A woman in a padded coat rushed over, shouting angrily. “They’re just kids! How can you treat them like this? Where’s your conscience?”

Zeph stayed silent, his cold gaze landing on her.
