Chapter 148
Back then, Edward had been confident. Girls like Nicole, straight out of an orphanage, were the easiest to control. She could make money and survive, but she lacked security, craved affection, and was overly sensitive.
All he had to do was play it right. With his looks, a crooked finger was enough. She would shower him with gifts, attention, and even throw herself at him without hesitation.
So what the hell happened to Nicole?
She used to give gifts whenever he hinted. She even rented a place just to chase him. Dropping over 1,000 dollars on a pair of sneakers didn’t make her blink.
How did a girl that obsessed with love flip like a switch and turn into someone completely different?
Wait.
Edward suddenly thought of what Mary had said before, all those vague comments about Nicole being a different person. Could it be… Had she really changed into someone else?
If a disaster like this could happen, then what couldn’t?
Lost in thought, Edward didn’t notice anything strange about the man in front of him. His mind was full of
Nicole’s secret. 1
If he was right, then as long as he held onto that leverage, he would never have to worry about food
again.
Something wet dripped down his neck.
Wait… Why did it smell like blood?
He reached up and touched it. His hand came away soaked in red.
“Ah!”
He screamed, stumbling backward.
The body collapsed, revealing a woman in a red coat standing there, only her cold eyes visible.
Edward still recognized her. That blood-stained blade belonged to Nicole.
“Nicole, are you insane?”
Anger hit first, then shame flooded in. His face burned as he wished he could disappear on the spot.
Nicole let out a cold laugh. “You really are open-minded.”
Before he could react, Cola was already lunging forward, teeth flashing as he tore into Edward’s face, as if he had been waiting for this.

Trash!
Trying to convince his human to sell him to an illegal slaughterhouse, huh?
Edward screamed as blood covered his face, “Get this damn dog off me!”
“Dog?” Nicole stared at him. “He’s got more humanity than you ever will, and he’s never lived off someone else.”
Since his human hadn’t told him to stop, Cola kept biting. He meant it. Every time he saw Edward, he would go for him.
Edward struggled desperately. “It was you. You killed Mary!”
“I did. So what?” Nicole called Cola back. “Don’t act like you haven’t killed anyone. Didn’t you stab Faye to death?”
His survival instinct kicked in hard. The blood on his face had already started to freeze as he shook uncontrollably. “Y-You’re not Nicole!”
“What do you mean?”
“You’re some kind of soul that took over her body.”
“Read too many novels?”
“Don’t deny it. I know you’re not her!” His voice was firm. “I knew her. You’re a fake!”
“Didn’t expect you to be that sharp.” Nicole didn’t deny it. “You’re right. The real Nicole’s been dead for a long time. I’m not her.”
She smiled calmly as she said it.
With blood blurring his vision, Edward didn’t notice the edge in her expression. Instead, he felt a rush of satisfaction. “I can keep your secret.”
“What do you want?”
“I want to move to the 18th floor. I want to stay with you.”
“That’s it?”
“And you split your supplies with me. Half.”
“Anything else?”
Of course, there was. Get inside first, win her over again, and become part of the group.
“You can trust me. As long as you agree, I won’t tell anyone. Not a single word.”
“But I don’t trust the living.”

Edward froze. “What?”
Before he could react, a sharp pain exploded in his chest. His eyes went wide in shock. He never expected her to turn on him so suddenly.
“Only the dead won’t talk.”
So much for the campus heartthrob. Aside from his face, he had nothing.
Once the illusion of love was shattered, Edward wasn’t worth anything. Thinking back to her past life, Nicole felt that she had been blind to let him drain everything from her before dying miserably.
She pulled the blade free, blood spraying out. If she hadn’t wanted to confirm whether he knew about the storage space, she wouldn’t have wasted a single word.
As it turned out, Mary had kept her mouth shut. She never told him.
That group was finally wiped out.
As long as Nicole stayed careful, the secret of the storage space would remain safe.
Even with Edward dead, Cola still wasn’t satisfied. He lifted his leg and peed on his face.
Nicole almost choked.
Damn. The dog was even more vengeful than she was. He was definitely not someone to cross.
After that, Cola kept pawing at the other man, digging through his clothes.
The scene was too much. Nicole looked away.
Cola kept at it until he dragged out a bag of food and a gleaming gold bar. The food weighed about five pounds, fresh rice.
The gold bar was around half a pound. Before all this, it would’ve been worth a lot.
Cola dropped them in front of Nicole like an offering.
Here. He paid up again.
Nicole tossed everything into her storage space and didn’t bother cleaning up. She left with Cola.
People died every day, and bodies were everywhere. No one cared who did it.
The sky was darkening fast. Night was coming, and with it, more danger.
When Nicole turned back onto the main road, she was surprised to see Zeph still there, holding Poppy’s hand, waiting in the freezing wind.
