Nicole knew this more than anyone. She had seen it before in her last life, more than once.

“What do you mean, send them out to steal? You’re disgusting. They’re just kids. They didn’t mean it!” The woman’s face twisted as she shouted. “Your kid and your dog beat up my son! If you don’t explain yourself right now, I’m calling the cops…”

Before she could finish, Nicole drove the knife forward. Not into her heart, but into her side, the blade

pushing in before flicking upward.

The thick, padded coat tore open, stuffing spilling out.

The woman went pale, collapsing to the ground in shock.

“Fail to control your kids again, and it won’t just be your clothes next time.”

The woman’s teeth chattered, and she was unable to get a single word out. The two kids trembled

beside her.

Poppy picked up the bag from the ground and looked at Zeph, both nervous and hopeful. “Zeph, I won.”

Zeph patted her head. “You did great.”

Things like this happened all the time. Seeing the three of them cowed, Nicole didn’t bother pressing further. They turned and headed back toward the complex.

Poppy and Cola walked ahead, while Zeph and Nicole followed behind. He spoke first. “Going to cut

bamboo tomorrow?”

Nicole frowned slightly. Bamboo didn’t burn well.

“We need to make three more crossbows. Bamboo arrows wear out fast. It’s better to stock up,” he said.

Better safe than sorry. Nicole had no objections. “Sounds good.”

Zeph was about to say more when Cola suddenly slipped free of the rope, nearly tripping Poppy.

Cola remembered what his human had taught him. Stay quiet, no noise. Tail tucked and shoulders low, he moved off in another direction like a shadow.

After spending so much time together, Nicole instantly recognized it. That was how he looked before an

attack.

Frowning, she followed his line of sight.

There were quite a few people in the distance, bundled up so heavily that they were impossible to recognize.

Nicole pulled out her binoculars and scanned them one by one, then caught a familiar face.

She said to Zeph, “Take Poppy back first. Cola and I have something to handle.” 1

Without waiting for a response, she moved quickly after the dog.

Cola stayed low-key. Nicole wrapped her face tight, leaving only her eyes exposed, keeping a steady distance as she followed the two men ahead.

They slipped past the crowd, crossed the street, and entered an abandoned office building.

A sharp glint flashed in Cola’s eyes. He moved lightly up the stairs, pausing now and then to look back at her, as if urging her to hurry up.

Nicole didn’t rush. She climbed steadily, scanning her-surroundings as she went.

By the time they reached the top floor, she didn’t need to worry about direction. Cola, with his sharp senses, led the way.

From inside one of the offices came low, filthy sounds.

Nicole moved silently to the window and glanced in. One of them had someone pinned against a desk…

Cola’s eyes widened, muscles tensing, ready to charge in.

Nicole covered his eyes and ears. It wasn’t something he needed to see. 1
