Chapter 15
Life wasn’t easy even on the upper floors, either. Toilets still barely flushed, but the stench kept rising, thick enough to make people gag.
Just in case, Nicole had stocked plenty of heavy black trash bags for emergencies.
She thought about tossing them downstairs afterward, but decided against it. If it came to that, she would use the storage space instead.
She was about to start cooking when Beatrice knocked.
After sleeping most of the day, both Beatrice and Hughie looked much better.
Beatrice brought over some alcohol fuel blocks. When she saw how complete Nicole’s setup was, with vegetables growing on the balcony and rabbits being raised, her jaw nearly dropped.
“Nicole,” she said in awe, “no wonder Hughie says you could survive alone in the desert.”
Nicole had always been the type to stock up and grow things. That part wasn’t worth hiding. But some items
needed a believable source.
“I got lucky,” she said. “A few days before the typhoon, I helped Jeremy land a client. It was some rich kid obsessed with apocalypse games. I stocked a bunch of medical supplies for him. When I delivered, he tossed in a survival kit as a thank-you.”
She pointed out a few things, including the inflatable raft and an emergency kit.
Beatrice and Hughie were stunned.
“The way you’re saying it,” Hughie muttered, “it really feels like the world’s ending.”
They weren’t the only ones thinking that. In the first days after the storm, the internet had been flooded with
posts.
They had lived nearly 20 years without seeing a disaster like this. It wasn’t just the southern coast, either. Worse, there was still no rescue in sight. Anyone would be scared.
Hughie wondered aloud if the rich kid had known something in advance. Otherwise, how could the timing be that perfect?
In his building, a young man who lived alone and already struggled with depression had lost it after running out of food. He jumped from the building and drowned.
How was this any different from an apocalypse?
Hughie suddenly asked, “Are you still in touch with Jeremy?”
Nicole shook her head. She had converted the commission from the medicine deal into supplies and placed anonymous online orders for delivery to his place. After that, Jeremy would have to manage on his own.
Jeremy was loyal enough. When friends went out, he paid freely. As a friend, he was solid.
But he was desperate for affection. He only dated older women. Anyone who tried to talk sense into him got snapped at.
Eventually, Nicole stopped interfering. 1
