Chapter 16
Nicole’s breathing tightened. She grabbed the binoculars and focused.
At the same time, in the same place, two tornadoes of nearly identical shape spun in opposite directions. Like massive shredders, they tore forward wildly.
Trees were ripped out of the ground. Buildings folded in on themselves. Cars were flung skyward like toys. Even the floodwater was sucked upward in endless spirals.
The two funnels rushed toward each other. Their high-speed currents looked like countless jagged saw blades, grinding everything in their path into nothing.
Beatrice gasped, clapping a hand over her mouth.
The tornadoes slammed together. As they collided, they twisted and merged, slicing straight through a skyscraper. The building cracked, shattered, and was swallowed whole.
A tower more than 30 stories tall vanished in less than a minute.
The fused tornado went berserk. Like a tantrum-throwing child, it smashed and flung everything around it, careless and brutal.
Nicole had lived this long, but had never once seen twin tornadoes. Their destructive power was more than double that of a normal one, though their duration was shorter.
Even so, ten minutes was more than enough to leave a city in ruins.
Nicole didn’t blink, her gaze locked on the spot where the skyscraper had stood.
She didn’t know if twin tornadoes had appeared in her last life, but she knew that the building hadn’t been destroyed back then. During the deep freeze, she had scavenged there. It had already been looted clean, with nothing left but wreckage and scars.
But now, it was gone. Completely erased.
This second chance had given Nicole confidence. She now had supplies in her storage space and accurate foreknowledge of disasters.
And yet, things were changing.
When the tornado finally disappeared from view, even Beatrice, usually bright and fearless, looked shaken and short of breath.
She clutched Nicole’s arm, her hands cold. “Nicole… Is this really just a typhoon?”
The world felt alien, as if the prosperity from before the storm could never be reached again.
The tornado didn’t just tear down that skyscraper. That area had been packed with shopping centers and residential buildings. It had been the most densely populated part of the city.
Did anyone there have a chance of surviving?
Hughie’s expression was heavy. He let out a bitter laugh. “They named this typhoon Cleaver, huh? Feels like it really is chopping the city to pieces.”
He pulled Beatrice close, resting his head on her shoulder.

“Don’t be scared. We got lucky and avoided it. If one day we can’t, maybe it won’t even be that bad. It might take us before we even realize it.” 1
Because of how he grew up, Hughie always carried a trace of gloom. That was why he had fallen for Beatrice at first sight. On the ring, she had gotten beaten black and blue, then hopped down smiling as if nothing happened.
She was sunlight itself, warm and unbreakable.
But now, she couldn’t smile. That made Hughie ache.
Tornadoes had been appearing nonstop these days. This wasn’t even the first time they had seen one.
Beatrice hugged him back.
“If we really get unlucky and run into one,” she asked quietly, “would you really be willing to die?”
“Doesn’t matter if I’m willing or not,” Hughie said. “At least we’d go together.”
Nicole stood there, feeling very done with life.
What did she do to deserve this?
Natural disasters were terrifying enough. Now she had to endure this display of affection, too.
Beatrice was a fighter, with solid muscle from head to toe. Her waist was thicker than Hughie’s. Even her thighs were bigger. The contrast was so wrong that it made Nicole’s eyes hurt.
