The moment Nicole finished speaking, the older woman’s face went pale, and she didn’t dare say another word.

Afraid Nicole might not be done killing, she turned and hurried off.

The others broke out in cold sweat, standing there like they had lost their voices, not daring to say a

thing.

What were they thinking, getting involved in someone else’s business?

Terrified of drawing the attention of a killer, they scattered after the old woman.

Cola broke free from the leash and rushed over, pawing at Nicole, panic and anger written all over his face as he whined. He wanted to make sure Nicole was fine.

She rubbed his head to calm him. “I’m okay.”

Poppy ran over as well, her face full of worry. “Nicole, are you okay?”

The concern from both of them warmed Nicole’s chest. In this broken world, someone still cared about

her.

Derek and Victor let out a breath they didn’t realize they had been holding. “Glad you’re okay.”

The brick had hit hard. Nicole looked at Zeph, worried. “You sure you’re fine?”

He rolled his shoulder slightly, a flicker of pain crossing his eyes. “Should be…nothing serious.”

His movement wasn’t as smooth as before. Even if the bone wasn’t broken, it had to be a bad soft tissue

injury.

Derek said, “Let’s head back. If it’s bad, we can go to a clinic.”

Medicine was scarce, but some doctors were still working under government orders. At least they could check injuries, even if patients had to find their own meds.

A proper look from someone experienced would ease their minds.

Zeph switched the log to his other shoulder. Nicole slowed down behind him, pushing the sled and keeping an eye on him the whole way.

He was definitely hurt.

Poppy wiped her eyes, worried about her brother, but she didn’t cry.

Back at Crownview Residences, Beatrice and the others came down to help carry things upstairs.

When they heard Zeph was injured, they were stunned.

How could someone like him get hurt?

No one explained how it happened.

Jeremy glanced at Nicole a couple of times and seemed to figure it out.

After everything was brought upstairs, Nicole followed Zeph into his place. “Take off your jacket. I’ll check it.”

She had only studied medicine for a year, but it was still more than most people knew.

Zeph didn’t refuse. He lit the charcoal stove first, then waited until the room warmed up. “Poppy, take Cola outside.”

Poppy didn’t quite understand, but she listened.

Cola didn’t want to leave, but seeing the look on his human’s face, he reluctantly followed her out.

A little awkward, Zeph started taking off his layers. He peeled off one piece after another until only a

thermal shirt remained.

He sat stiffly, not even sure where to put his hands.
