The Apocalypse Survival Manual (Three Days Before Doomsday, I Stockpiled Billions) novel Chapter 162

Chapter 162

Nicole’s words instantly set the leader off. He raised his gun, ready to fire.

At the last second, Oliver rushed forward to stop him.

“Don’t use the gun. We can talk this out.”

He turned and tried to persuade Nicole.

“Nicole, I know you’re capable, but don’t pick a fight you can’t win. Things aren’t the same anymore. You’re not short on food anyway. Staying alive is what matters. Don’t risk your life over this. If you trust me, I’ll negotiate for you. I’ll try to get the amount lowered. How about that?”

Nicole looked at him. “You’re working pretty hard for them. How much are they paying you?”

“What did you say?!” Oliver froze, then his face twisted with anger. “I nearly got myself killed trying to lower the protection rations for everyone, and this is how you repay me? You think I’m in on it?”

“You’re wearing layers that thick and somehow ended up covered in blood. Are you sure that’s not just chicken blood or fake dye?”

Her words landed like a bomb. The survivors all snapped their heads toward Oliver, their expressions shifting as suspicion and anger crept in.

“Th-that’s slander! Total nonsense! I’ve always played it straight. I don’t take sides, and I don’t cheat anyone,” Oliver retorted.

“You call that doing things the right way? Half the food Faye and the others traded for ended up lining your pockets, didn’t it?” Nicole sneered.

“Woof!” Cola barked in protest, clearly offended.

Oliver stomped his foot in frustration. “Fine! If that’s what you all think, I’m done. Let someone else

handle it!”

He stepped aside.

The next second, the survivors surrounded him.

It finally clicked.

Other buildings only had to pay three pounds, but Building 1 had been charged six. Oliver had been playing them the whole time, working with the collectors behind their backs.

The leader’s face darkened when he saw things slipping.

“You’re one stubborn piece of work. Go ahead, open that door if you’ve got the nerve! Let’s see if I don’t put a bullet in you.”

Nicole moved to open the door. She wasn’t scared at all.

The door swung open.

The leader shoved the gun against Nicole’s chest, while another man aimed at the rest of Nicole’s group. “Don’t move. Hands up!”

They had heard Nicole’s group had guns, too. They wanted to strike first.

Nicole stared at the leader. They were all wearing face coverings, only their eyes showing. There was no way to tell who they were.

Even if the police surrounded them, all they had to do was ditch the masks, slip into a residential building, and change clothes. No one would ever find them.

She didn’t resist. She lowered the blade in her hand and then smiled at him, something cold and strange

in her expression.

The leader faltered for a split second.

Right then, Nicole moved. Her hand flashed to her pocket, pulling out a dagger, and she drove it forward

again and again.

She was fast and precise.

As blood spread, the leader kept pulling the trigger.

Nicole swung for his neck. “Having fun with that?”

Fake gun or not, it didn’t matter. She was wearing cut-resistant gear under a reinforced vest.
