Chapter 164
Gabrielle insisted for a while, and in the end, the two households each sent back a pound of arrowroot flour.
At the same time, Victor gave Nicole’s group a homemade “bike.” The back was fitted with a heating device. As long as someone sat on it and pedaled hard, it generated power. The heat pipes would
release warmth into the room.
It worked as both an exercise and a way to raise the indoor temperature.
Victor adjusted his glasses, his smile gentle and reserved. “I’m still looking for parts. Once I find them, I can modify it into a charging system.”
The 18th floor already stayed warm enough, and they were even sweating half the time, so Nicole didn’t
take it.
“Keep the bike for now. When you’ve upgraded it to charge devices, then bring it over.”
After seeing Nicole off, Gabrielle didn’t know what to do with herself. Embarrassment weighed on her.
“I didn’t expect the other two households to be that selfish. They were clearly home, but they hid instead of coming out. Something’s bound to happen sooner or later. Be careful when you go in and out, and try to keep your distance from them.”
The entire collection team had been wiped out today. There was no way they would just let it go.
Retaliation was inevitable.
The 18th floor was capable, no doubt, but they weren’t the type to hand out help for nothing.
They hadn’t said anything today, but what about next time? If they were pushed too far, they could easily wait until the 17th floor was overrun before stepping in.
Gabrielle didn’t say that out loud. After all, everyone was afraid of dying. They were scared, but that didn’t mean Nicole’s group wasn’t.
Sometimes, selfishness only made things spiral faster.
That day, the building was split between relief and disaster.
Oliver’s home was completely looted. The survivors who had been squeezed dry for so long finally turned things around, and they showed no mercy.
Those who grabbed supplies ran off with them. Those who hadn’t managed to get anything took it out on Oliver’s family, beating them and even stripping the heavy clothes off their backs.
The people on the 16th floor were a step too late and didn’t get anything. When they came back, they ended up dealing with the bodies from the two floors above.
It grated on them. How did the fight end up spilling onto their floor?

In the end, they decided to install a door at the stairwell, too.
When Nicole returned to the 18th floor, Beatrice was waiting in the hallway.
She pulled Nicole into the room, confusion written all over her face. “How did you know their guns were fake?”
“I didn’t,” Nicole said honestly. “If someone experienced hadn’t given me the signal, I wouldn’t have stepped out.”
Right. Zeph knew his stuff. One look was enough for him to tell whether it was real or just for show.
Something still felt off to Beatrice. “He was standing behind you and didn’t say a word. How were you two communicating?”
Nicole blinked, caught off guard. After a moment, she answered like it was obvious.
“We’ve lived on the same floor this long. We’ve been through life and death together more than once.
You couldn’t tell?”
Three pairs of eyes turned to her at the same time, all of them carrying a knowing look.
“You’re something else,” Beatrice said bluntly. “Hughie and I sleep in the same room, and I still have no idea what he’s thinking half the time. What are you, living inside Zeph’s head?”
Hughie jumped in immediately to show his loyalty. “Honey, you’re the only one on my mind. Always!”
