The rain kept pouring, the wind howling. Beatrice’s voice was torn apart and carried away.

What was happening on Building 2’s rooftop was seen by plenty of people hiding inside their homes. Voices rose from different floors, shouting at the woman, begging her to wake up and stop.

Yet, she didn’t react.

Instead, she yanked the children with her and jumped.

Someone from Building 2 rushed up to the rooftop, trying to help, but it was already too late. They could only watch as the mother and two children fell.

A heavy splash sent water shooting high into the air.

One of the children thrashed in the floodwater, screaming, “Help! Mom… Help!”

Hughie covered Beatrice’s eyes, forcing her to turn away from the scene.

The twin tornadoes earlier had taken countless lives, but they were too far away to see clearly. The impact wasn’t nearly as crushing as this.

Beatrice couldn’t understand it.

It was just a typhoon. How could it push someone to this?

Even if the mother had given up on living, the children’s lives had only just begun. What right did she have to take that from them?

The water slowly stilled. The typhoon roared on.

Hughie shut the emergency window and guided Beatrice, who looked completely stunned, back into the living

room.

Nicole was calmer. She had seen worse in her last life. As time went on, things only became more brutal, more

inhuman.

Without a strong will, survival wasn’t possible.

“I know that woman,” Hughie said quietly.

Growing up in the orphanage, he had seen every kind of misery. His tolerance was far higher than Beatrice’s.

“Her husband was living off her, but he was also keeping another woman on the side. He had a kid with her, too. He even took the family’s savings to buy that woman a house and a car.”,

Before the typhoon, Hughie had overheard some older women gossiping downstairs.

The woman jumping with her kids wasn’t just betrayed. She had lost both love and money. And that man probably didn’t even come back during the storm.

A woman alone with two children was already stretched to the limit. Even Hughie and Beatrice were exhausted. Add natural disasters and the ugliness of human nature, and she probably saw no way out.

She couldn’t bear the thought of her children suffering alone, so she chose this kind of escape.

Hughie looked lost. “Do you think these disasters will really end?”

It sounded like he was asking Nicole. Or maybe himself.

After they had witnessed disaster after disaster, their moods sank. Hughie and Beatrice returned to the neighboring unit.

Nicole locked her door and played some soft music to calm herself down. Once she had steadied herself, she took out a serving of beef stew, braised chicken, and sautéed greens.

She put on a light, silly show and ate while watching, trying to pass the time.

The typhoon continued. The sky stayed dim, neither fully night nor morning.

No one knew how Zeph taught her, but Poppy came knocking almost every day now. Lately, she had been very punctual, always there after lunch.

“Nicole, can I see Snowy and Ash?” 1

Her hair was tied into a little bun. She tilted her head and smiled at Nicole, pressing an egg into her hand.

A child’s pure, unguarded smile could heal even the worst mood. Her grape-dark eyes shone like the brightest stars in the sky.

Poppy loved the rabbits. She often squatted on the balcony watching them. She had even named the breeding pair herself.

The balcony was enclosed with glass, and cardboard was laid under the cage, so it stayed pretty clean. Nicole brought the rabbits inside and let Poppy play with them.
