Dressed in worn, ragged clothes and carrying nothing, Nicole didn’t draw a single glance. The pickpockets and muggers along the road didn’t even bother looking her way.

Someone like her wasn’t worth the effort.

By the time she reached Liora Estates, it was nearly dark.

She found a spot sheltered from the wind, pulled out a pair of binoculars, and watched from a distance.

There were guards at the main gate. Anyone going in or out had to show some kind of round token and give a password.

It had been too long. Nicole couldn’t remember everything, but watching their lips move jogged her memory about the pass tokens and codes.

Luckily, those details had come up during the public trials before.

She focused on their mouths and quickly matched the words.

There were four entrances to Liora Estates. The passwords rotated, and each entrance used a different

token.

Using the cover of darkness, Nicole circled all four access points. She watched people hauling in supplies they had extorted, while others stumbled out, flushed and satisfied, living off what they had

taken from survivors.

Just as she was about to leave, she saw a group of men dragging several young women toward the

entrance.

They struggled, but no one stopped them.

Once someone was taken inside a place like that, there was no coming back out.

A weight settled in Nicole’s chest. She slipped into her storage space under the cover of darkness.

Half an hour later, she came back out, a letter in hand. She put on her night-vision goggles, strapped on her ice skates, and moved quickly through the freezing wind.

She headed for the police’s temporary station. The building was dark.

There hadn’t been enough people to begin with. Now, with the disasters escalating, those trying to keep order had become targets themselves.

It was dangerous even during the day, let alone at night. At this point, there wasn’t even anyone on duty.

They had tried recruiting for patrol units, but order had collapsed too quickly. Crime spread faster than they could respond. Even the body recovery teams were in high demand, yet the patrol units still couldn’t fill their ranks.

People feared dying more than they feared going hungry.

Later, when the authorities stepped in with full force, things slowly improved.

Nicole slipped the letter into the mailbox.

Everything she knew about the Drakebane Guild was written inside.

If they took it seriously and acted early, they could stop the group before it grew stronger. It would save lives, including their own.

A group capable of producing illegal firearms wasn’t something to underestimate. Even when they were eventually taken down, it had cost dozens of lives.

Right now, their operation was probably still in its early stages.

Nicole was just human. Even with a second chance, all she wanted was to survive a little longer.

This was as much as she could do.

By the time she returned to Crownview Residences, she saw a tall figure ahead.

She quickened her pace. “Zeph?”

The figure stopped. “Nicole?”

She looked surprised. “What are you doing out here?”

“Felt stuffy inside, so I came out for some air,” Zeph said, then glanced at her. “You?”
