Chapter 172
Since Nicole refused to take one, Hughie’s group each kept a gun.
As for the rest of the items, they agreed to treat them as shared property. They handed everything over to her for safekeeping, planning to trade them later if the chance came.
“What about the two units downstairs?”
Beatrice’s temper flared. “Let’s go down later, break their doors open, and kick them out! I’m sick just thinking about them.”
Jeremy thought for a moment. “What about the Goodmans?”
The Goodmans were decent enough. It was the other two scheming households that were exhausting to
deal with.
“That’s not our problem,” Nicole said. “We just need to hold the 18th floor.”
Want more after getting a foot in the door? Not happening!
Still, what happened today was a lesson for everyone. From now on, they had to be careful when going out. Getting targeted once was enough.
Beatrice spoke up, her tone firm. “Whether we live or die isn’t really up to us. If I ever get caught by them, don’t do anything stupid trying to save me.”
“Same here,” Jeremy added, just as serious. “I’ve got no one depending on me anyway. If I die, I die. Don’t walk into a trap for me. It’s not worth it.”
Hughie wrapped an arm around Beatrice. “If I go, I’m going with you.”
Nicole shot them an annoyed look.
“Why are you all talking like that? Are you planning to die or something? Cut it out! Don’t jinx it! We’re all going to live long enough to see this mess blow over and everything get back to normal.”
After Nicole and Zeph left, Beatrice suddenly froze.
“Wait… Where’s our firewood?”
They rushed downstairs, only to find it gone.
Beatrice planted her hands on her hips and shouted down the hallway, her voice echoing through the floors.
“Who took our firewood? You’ve got 30 minutes to bring it back, or I’ll come knocking on every door myself!”
They had risked their lives to bring that wood back. There was no way they were letting someone else take it.

After yelling, they headed back upstairs to wait.
Hughie kept track of the time. As soon as the 30 minutes were up, they went down to collect it.
Sure enough, the wood had been returned, stacked neatly in the hallway. It took a few trips to carry everything back, but not a single piece was missing.
Nicole couldn’t help but feel it. The 18th floor’s reputation had really spread.
The firewood was a small issue. The bigger question was what to do about those people next.
Nicole knew where their base was. If they were going to strike, they had to finish it in one go.
That group had a name. The Drakebane Guild.
She remembered it clearly because in her previous life, she had watched them stand trial in public before being executed.
But that had happened months later. Right now, it was still early.
Back then, they did more than just collect protection rations. They harassed women, attacked officials, and committed crime after crime. Survivors suffered under them. The police and local security forces investigated, but it wasn’t enough.
Eventually, the government sent in special units, even military forces. It took a large-scale operation to wipe them out. Hundreds were captured and tried on the spot. Their crimes took over half an hour to list, and even then, it didn’t cover everything.
