Chapter 178
Complaining was one thing. After venting, they still had to keep going.
Zeph laid out every possible way their defenses could be breached, then followed each one with a clean
countermeasure.
Nicole couldn’t help but feel it again. Surviving well in this world wasn’t easy.
That evening, Gabrielle called out from downstairs that the relief supplies, originally scheduled for the day after tomorrow, had been moved up to tomorrow.
Beatrice and the others were surprised. Why the sudden change?
Nicole instinctively glanced at Zeph, just as he looked over at her.
Their eyes met for a brief second, then both looked away.
“Beatrice, I’m heading out early tomorrow to pick up supplies,” Nicole said. “I’ll take Cola out for a walk in
the afternoon.”
Beatrice didn’t think much of it. “Sure. We’ll go after you get back.”
That night, Nicole couldn’t fall asleep. She had thought that with her storage space, life would be easier this time around.
And yet, even that came with a cost.
She just hoped things would go the way she wanted tomorrow.
The relief distribution started at 9 a.m. Nicole and Zeph agreed over the walkie talkie to leave at 7 a.m. They headed out early, but to Nicole’s surprise, Beatrice was already in the hallway, pedaling the bike.
Not seeing Poppy, she casually asked, “She’s not going?”
Zeph shook his head. “She’s still asleep.”
There was still plenty of time before distribution, and the two of them were heading out this soon without Poppy.
Yeah, they could deny it all they wanted, but it was pretty obvious what was going on. 1
Of course, Beatrice didn’t call them out. She just waited it out.
They stepped out of Crownview Residences, but instead of heading to the distribution site, they made their way toward Liora Estates.
Today was the birthday of the Drakebane Guild’s leader, Luke Gray. Based on Zeph’s scouting, they were planning a major celebration.
They had just reached the intersection when Zeph suddenly stopped.
