Chapter 187
Nicole’s brows knit tight.
Seriously… What was wrong with this guy?
She had been too far away during the execution to see Luke’s face clearly in her past life, but the official report had laid it all out.
He was a mixed-race drug trafficker who got his start up north, then smuggled product across the border and landed on the most-wanted list. It was enough to put him away for life, several times over. He had
been on the run ever since.
When the disasters hit, he cashed in on the chaos, built his own criminal network, and went all in. Arson, murder, looting, he did it all, acting like the authorities didn’t even exist.
Suddenly, Zeph squeezed her arm twice.
Nicole caught the signal instantly and pulled a weapon from her storage space, passing it to him.
The Drakebane Guild was way too confident, killing the lights like this, as though nothing could touch
them.
Fine. Then they would take the opening.
There was no way to hide anything in swimwear, but that didn’t matter when she could pull weapons out
of thin air.
The room plunged into darkness. Everyone’s attention stayed locked on the stage.
Zeph raised his hand and fired. A single shot cracked through the noise.
Luke’s head snapped back, blood bursting as he dropped.
Screams tore from the twelve women around him. Zeph didn’t hesitate, spinning and firing again. The central guard took a hit, his submachine gun clattering to the floor.
Nicole moved at the same time. Night vision goggles on, she pulled out smoke grenades and tossed them in multiple directions. Thick, choking smoke spread fast.
She pulled her mask tight. Under the cover of darkness, she quickly strapped on her body armor.
Gunfire exploded across the hall. Moments ago, there had been laughter and music. Now, it was chaos as people screamed, scattering in every direction.
The guards didn’t care who they hit. They opened fire, sweeping the room.
Nicole took cover, aiming through the haze with her night vision. She fired at the guards. Whether she hit clean or not, bodies went down.
Lights snapped back on, harsh and blinding. Acrid smoke choked the air, coughing broke out

everywhere, and gunfire cracked through it all.
Zeph picked out the difference in the shots.
Someone else had made a move.
He grabbed the fallen guard’s submachine gun and shoved it at Nicole. “Go.”
She didn’t argue. The weapon vanished into her storage space.
They pushed out of the hall in the chaos. Nicole tossed him a vest and a military coat as they ran. Swim trunks weren’t exactly low profile.
They dressed on the move. The elevator was jammed with people, so Zeph pulled her toward the stairs.
They ran, floor after floor, until they heard footsteps charging up from below, fast and perfectly in sync.
Zeph dropped down one level and slipped into the nineteenth-floor hallway. He shut the corridor door, killed the power, then jammed it shut with an iron bar.
The 19th floor had been remodeled. There was only one unit on the whole level: Luke’s residence.
Zeph glanced at Nicole. “Can you get it open?”
Time was tight. Nicole had no idea why he wanted to stop here, but if he was suggesting they break in, there had to be something important inside.
