If the authorities didn’t handle it the same way across the board, that 160,000 pounds of food would just sit there, useless. No one knew how many people would go hungry because of it.

Jasper fixed his eyes on the man causing trouble. “Tell me exactly what you lost.”

The man launched into a list. The longer he talked, the more absurd it sounded. Rice and cooking oil made sense, but then he started naming expensive wines and rare liquor like he was reading off a menu.

“An ’82 Lafite?” Jasper kept his tone even. “Which château?”

“Obviously 1982.”

A few people who knew wine burst out laughing. “That’s not what he asked, idiot! You don’t even know what you’re talking about, do you?”

Jasper paused, then asked, “How much did you pay per bottle, and how big were they?”

“Over 16,000. And each one was….about 17 ounces.”

Jasper’s expression hardened. “Take him away. Investigate him properly. We’re not letting this kind of behavior slide.”

Just like that, the man ended up in handcuffs.

After that, no one else dared push their luck.

Jeremy watched through binoculars, shaking his head with a grin. “Seriously? People like that still exist? Walking around like that and still trying to scam, and not even doing it well.”

Once that was over, things moved to the final stage. The prisoners in orange-yellow vests were loaded onto trucks and sent off to the Mount Rushburn coal mines.

As for the ones in orange-red… They would be executed by a firing squad.

When they had preyed on others, they had shown no mercy. Now, facing the same end, no one could stay calm.

Some broke down completely. Others collapsed before anything even started. Even the ones who passed out were dragged up and tied to wooden posts.

With soldiers and police clearing space, the crowd moved back, leaving a wide open area in the square. The prisoners stood in rows, waiting in the freezing cold.

Everyone stood up. Some leaned forward to get a better look, while others turned away or covered their

eyes.

Poppy buried her face against Zeph’s neck, too afraid to watch.

Cola couldn’t see over the crowd, so he kept pawing at Nicole, whining.

Nicole let out a sigh and crouched down. The dog climbed onto her back with practiced ease. He straightened up, resting his head on her shoulder. From that vantage point, like he ruled everything in sight, he almost felt like howling.

Then gunfire broke out in sharp, rapid bursts, one after another, and the prisoners dropped where they stood.

Cola’s eyes widened. So many fresh bodies, still steaming in the cold air.

When it was over, people began to leave, already thinking about how they were going to survive the next day.

Since they were already out, Hughie suggested stopping by a nearby department store to see if they could find anything useful.

As the crowd thinned, the square slowly cleared, and Cola drew even more attention.

That moment earlier had made him stand out.

People couldn’t help staring, wondering what kind of people could raise a dog like that in a world like this.

With their strength obvious, the group from the 18th floor didn’t worry about it. They let people look.

Cola grabbed the leash and handed it to Nicole, tail wagging, urging her to hurry and take him for a walk.

There were still plenty of people around, and Nicole didn’t relax. They were heading to the department store next, and she couldn’t keep her eyes on him the whole time. She was already thinking about putting him in a bag and carrying him.
