Chapter 206
Nicole had no plans to go out. She was staying in, taking it easy and fattening Cola up.
Zeph turned it down, too. He had Poppy to look after.
As for Hughie’s group, that was even less likely. Jeremy and Hughie had already decided to stick with Zeph and learn whatever they could to stay alive.
They were fired up, ready to toughen up and become real men.
“Thanks, Gabrielle. We’ll come find you if we need anything.”
People like them didn’t need jobs. If they went along with the crowd just to earn rations, how would they be any different from everyone else?
Once they dropped that edge, the ones still looking for trouble would come knocking. It wasn’t worth it.
Besides, earning food out there wasn’t easy. You risked your life going to work, and on payday, robbers would be waiting right outside.
Nicole didn’t have to imagine it. In her last life, she had worked herself to the bone, only to lose everything on the way home and nearly get stabbed for it.
It wasn’t that the attackers showed mercy. She just knew a bit of self-defense. Even then, she had been underfed and poorly dressed, and there were too many of them. Surviving at all had been a stroke of luck.
In short, the 18th floor chose to sit it out again.
Back in her room, Nicole fell into thought.
Honestly, she hadn’t expected the Drakebane Guild to be taken down so quickly. She hadn’t thought the police would actually believe the report, much less move that fast.
Despite that, they had coordinated with the military and wiped out the criminal base in one decisive
strike.
She had assumed the chaos would drag on for months. Instead, it ended in one sweep. Fewer soldiers and officers died, and countless survivors were saved.
Something about that stirred her.
She had seen the worst of human nature during the apocalypse and died because of it. There was no way she would trust people again, let alone help them.
Even so, one thing she couldn’t deny was that until her final moment, the state had never stopped trying to rescue its people.
Call her selfish if you want. Even if her supplies rotted away in storage, she wouldn’t go out of her way to help individuals.

Yet, the government had helped her before. As long as her own safety wasn’t at risk, she didn’t mind doing something in return.
After thinking it over, Nicole picked up a pen and started writing.
She had only lived three years into the disaster. A typhoon for half a month. Flooding for three months. A
year of deep freeze, then came extreme heat. After that, earthquakes. And then, she died.
The deep freeze hadn’t been so bad. As long as you had food and blankets, you could endure it.
The extreme heat that followed, though, was something else entirely.
The southern coast already felt like a sauna. In that heat, it was like being boiled alive. The humidity and high temperatures brought disease with them.
It was especially bad in the months after the ice melted and the floods returned. The water no longer surged, and the bodies that had been frozen began to rot. Waste piled up from the survivors.
The deep freeze had locked away the stench and the bacteria. When the heat eventually came, it turned everything into a living nightmare.
The environment bred bacteria and viruses. Epidemics spread easily. Mosquitoes and rats multiplied, turning into infestations that preyed on survivors.
