Chapter 207
Nicole took Cola downstairs for a walk.
After several criminal groups had been wiped out and patrol teams were set up, the complex had grown much quieter.
Strangely enough, even though the police encouraged residents to report gang activity, and plenty of people in the complex had their issues with the 18th floor, no one stepped forward to report them.
The calm felt a little too deliberate.
People didn’t just avoid provoking the 18th floor. They went out of their way to steer clear of them
altogether.
Even when Nicole walked the dog, no one dared get close. If Cola wandered around on his own, no one tried anything either. 1
If they had something like sausage on hand, they probably would have tried bribing the dog, hoping to use him as a way to get closer to the 18th floor.
Some had even tried asking the Goodmans to help make introductions, but after what happened with their neighbors, the Holts and the Fullers, Gabrielle shut that down completely. She wanted nothing to do with that kind of trouble anymore.
After the Drakebane Guild was taken down, the Fullers moved out of the shelter and returned home. They didn’t dare move back to the 17th floor and instead stayed in their own unit.
When they came to retrieve their belongings, Gabrielle greeted them politely but didn’t let them come upstairs. She had her daughter-in-law carry the items down instead.
Nicole walked Cola until it got dark. Then she slipped him into her backpack, strapped on her ice skates, and headed toward the police station.
She had originally planned to drop the letter in a municipal mailbox, but there were too many people around, and too many things to process. It could easily be ignored or tossed aside.
After thinking it through, she decided the police station was a better option.
They had taken her last report seriously. If they recognized the handwriting, there was a better chance they would believe this one, too. If the police passed it along to the city, it might carry more weight.
It was the most she could do.
Under the cover of darkness, Nicole avoided the patrols and quietly made her way toward the station.
To her surprise, there were officers on duty. Improved security was a good thing, but it meant she couldn’t get close.
After a moment’s thought, she let Cola out.

This was exactly why she had raised him.
“Go on.”

Cola understood. He took the letter in his mouth, gave a short run, and cleared the six-foot wall in a smooth leap without making a sound.
He landed inside, kept low, and moved through the shadows, avoiding the light. When the officer on duty stood up to get water, Cola seized the moment, rose, and placed the letter on the desk.
Then he slipped back out the way he came, jumped the wall again, and landed neatly in Nicole’s arms.
She gave him a piece of dried meat as a reward. “Good boy.”
When the officer turned around with his cup, he froze.
There was a letter on his desk.
If he hadn’t been a firm non-believer, he might have screamed on the spot. When he opened it and read the contents, a chill ran down his spine.
Then, just as quickly, he let out a short laugh.
Another one.
People claiming the world was ending, disasters piling up, society collapsing, everyone doomed…
