Chapter 21

“Illegal?”

Nicole yanked off their face coverings. She couldn’t name them, but she recognized them. Two were even active posters in the building group chat. People who used to look polished and decent were now hiding their faces and doing this in a disaster.

She took out her phone and snapped photos. “Go ahead and call the cops. Let’s see who they arrest.’

They hadn’t expected the 18th floor to band together. They hadn’t even managed to fight back. Faced with reality, they folded fast.

“We had no way to live,” one of them pleaded. “We were forced into this. You didn’t really lose anything. Can’t you just pretend nothing happened and let us go?”

Moments ago, they had been loud and vicious. Now, they were on their knees, begging.

If it were just about Nicole, she could’ve quietly killed them and been done with it. But tonight was about making

a statement.

She looked at 1801 and Beatrice. Neither objected.

“You’re lucky today,” Nicole said. “Next time, you won’t be. Get out.”

With the noise they had made, every floor stayed silent. No one dared open a door.

Nicole and the others didn’t even clean the blood. They just closed the doors and went back upstairs.

After witnessing Zeph’s brutal efficiency, Hughie tried to strike up a conversation. “Hey, I’m Hughie. We moved in a few days ago. You’re incredible. What do you do?”

Zeph paused at his door, then replied flatly, “Take a guess.”

Hughie froze.

Beatrice saw the warning signs immediately and tugged Hughie back. “Let’s go.”

This wasn’t someone you casually chatted up. Digging too much could get you into trouble.

The warning worked. For several days, no one dared pound on the stairwell door again.

Nicole pulled open the curtains early. The typhoon was still raging, clawing at the windows and walls, making the whole building feel like it was swaying.

The storm had arrived early. Fifteen straight days, and still no sign of stopping.

Her fear had come true. The disasters weren’t just getting worse. No one even knew if they would end.

But life went on. They could only survive one day at a time.

Snowy’s belly had grown enormous, and her appetite was terrifying. When Nicole teased her with leafy greens, she noticed blood on the cardboard lining the cage.

She felt the belly. Snowy was restless and agitated. She was going into labor.

New life in a disaster. Raise them, then someday, Nicole could have barbecue rabbit, fried rabbit, slow-cooked rabbit stew… Just thinking about it made her mouth water.

Soon, the first kit was born.

It was tiny, only a few inches long. It was barely bigger than a mouse.

By the time Poppy came over, Snowy had already had six. She secretly pulled two wilted cabbage leaves from her pocket and whispered, “You had babies. Eat up.”

There were ten kits in total. Twelve mouths, counting the parents.

Nicole suddenly felt the pressure

Pellets alone wouldn’t cut it. With over two weeks of nonstop storms and dark skies, the balcony yegetables were pale and weak from lack of sunlight. If she hadn’t been quietly cheating by moving them into the storage space they would’ve died already.

The crops inside the storage space were thriving. They were lush and green, a relief just to look at. That morning she couldn’t resist pulling some baby greens, washing them, and tossing them into a pot of pasta.

Homegrown food tasted incredible.
