Chapter 22
Nicole stepped onto the balcony in her pajamas. The typhoon still looked fierce, but she could feel the wind weakening. The rain, though, was coming down harder.
The second floor was completely underwater now. The water had climbed to the third, and the stairwell had turned chaotic again.
She ate a breakfast wrap stuffed with a fried egg, sliced ham, leafy greens, and ketchup. It came straight out of the storage space, still warm and crisp, the smell spreading the moment she bit into it.
She had made over a hundred of them and stacked them away. They would last her a long time.
Tasty, yes, but they were a little greasy.
Nicole poured herself a cup of honey citrus tea and flipped through her sophomore-level pharmacology textbook while she drank.
Around ten, someone knocked. She assumed it was Beatrice, but when she opened the door, it was Zeph.
That surprised her. He kept to himself and spoke little. Even though Poppy came over all the time, Nicole had barely exchanged a few words with him.
Her guard went up instantly.
Zeph looked tense, his usually cold face tight. “Poppy’s sick. Can you treat her?”
Nicole frowned. “What kind of sick?”
“Fever. Vomiting. Diarrhea. She’s talking nonsense.”
Sick kids should be taken to a hospital, but with the storm raging, that wasn’t happening.
Nicole set expectations first. “I can take a look, but I only know the basics. Don’t put all your hope on me.”
“Thank you.”
Given that he had helped her kill and dispose of bodies, Nicole agreed. She went back inside, slipped a folding fruit knife into her pocket, and followed him.
It was her first time inside 1801. The three-bedroom apartment was spacious, bright, and well laid out. The living room had old-fashioned furniture, neatly arranged, everything precise and clean. Compared to her own place, it looked almost formal.
These days, not many men knew how to keep a home like this.
Her gaze lifted to the balcony. Newly installed double-layer tempered glass, plus three stainless steel doors. The whole place looked like a fortress.
She coughed lightly. Clearly, her imagination hadn’t gone far enough.
Nicole followed him into Poppy’s room.
Poppy wasn’t just running a fever. Red rashes dotted her skin. Her dark eyes were dull and unfocused.
“Nicole,” she whispered.
Nicole checked Poppy’s temperature, took her pulse, and examined her eyes, breathing, and skin carefully. She

noticed the bruises all over Poppy’s small body.
Her medical skills weren’t advanced, but they were enough.
Nicole turned to Zeph. “Poppy’s weak. Some exercise is good for her; it builds strength and immunity. But you can’t push her like that.”
Whatever training he had put her through, the bruises said everything.
Short bursts of extreme training laad shocked her system. Her immunity dropped, her body went into chaos, and she caught a cold. That was why she was vomiting, feverish, and breaking out in rashes.
Nicole knew he didn’t know how to raise a kid, but this was worse than she expected.
Zeph’s face tightened with guilt. “I didn’t take good care of her.”
