Chapter 260

Nicole had no idea whether Beatrice and the others were inside the station or stranded somewhere during patrol. She sat in the motorboat waiting, her crossbow aimed at the crowd the entire time.

She didn’t speak. Her gaze stayed cold and sharp enough to make people feel like a blade might fly at them any second.

People were clearly unhappy about it, but something about her made them instinctively back off.

Nobody dared keep pushing her directly, though muttering and complaints still spread quietly through the crowd.

Before long, word spread that a vicious woman with a motorboat had arrived at the patrol station.

About 20 minutes later, someone shouted from the crowd.

“Nicole!”

Beatrice and the others emerged carrying clothes and bedding on their backs, each holding a crossbow.

The moment the crowd realized they knew each other, complaints erupted again.

People begged Beatrice and the others to take them along. Some claimed elderly parents were waiting at home. Others said their children were starving.

Every sentence boiled down to the same thing.

If you didn’t help, you were the bad guy.

Beatrice rejected them immediately. “Sorry. The motorboat isn’t mine. I don’t get to decide who rides.”

“We’re coworkers! Seriously? I didn’t think you’d be this cold-blooded.”

If this had happened back when the disasters first began, Beatrice probably would’ve felt guilty. 1

After surviving over a year of darkness and human ugliness, however, she only cared about protecting

herself now.

Besides, the motorboat belonged to Nicole. The fact that Nicole came personally to pick them up was already a huge favor. There was no way Beatrice would make decisions on her behalf.

The middle-aged woman yelling at her had always relied on connections to bully others, anyway. Back when Beatrice earned her promotion fairly, that same woman secretly reported her behind her back out of jealousy.

Now that Beatrice had already quit, the woman still dared to act arrogantly in front of her.

“Go to hell!”

Before, she had swallowed her anger for the sake of survival.

Now, she answered to nobody.

Thinking about all the humiliation she had endured at work, Beatrice threw a punch straight into the woman’s face. The hit sent the woman flying backward and knocked several teeth loose.

Hughie immediately followed with two hard kicks. “You think you can bully my woman?”

Who cared if she had powerful connections? Some tiny nobody with a little authority meant nothing now!

As of today, he quit, too.

The two of them jumping in together instantly stunned the entire crowd into silence. People instinctively backed away in fear.

Weren’t they security patrol officers? Since when could they just hit people whenever they felt like it?

Nicole seized the opportunity and drove the motorboat closer. The three quickly loaded their belongings aboard while keeping their crossbows ready in case someone tried anything.

With all four of them armed, nobody dared step forward. The crowd could only watch helplessly as the motorboat pulled away, cursing furiously from the shore.

Just as they were about to leave, a man suddenly charged toward them.

Nicole didn’t even blink before pulling the trigger. The bolt sliced past his ear.

“Ahhh!”

The man screamed and clutched the side of his head as blood streamed down his fingers.

The crowd panicked and scrambled backward, terrified of getting dragged into it themselves.

By the time the man recovered from the shock, the motorboat had already vanished into the distance. All he could do was scream curses into the air.

They drove the motorboat back to Crownview Residences and tossed their luggage onto dry ground.

Nicole looked confused. “Where’s your inflatable raft?”

“Don’t even ask,” Hughie groaned. “I’m still pissed about it.”

It had still been there this morning.

During patrol, the clouds suddenly cleared, and sunlight burst through the sky.
