The Apocalypse Survival Manual (Three Days Before Doomsday, I Stockpiled Billions) novel Chapter 272

Chapter 272

Nicole stopped holding back. She lined the rabbits up beside her and began sweeping everything into her storage space, one item at a time.

Sure enough, three giant cockroaches were forcibly rejected by the storage space and spat right back out, only to be ripped apart by the rabbit squad waiting nearby.

They cleared out Zeph’s apartment the same way. Nicole refused to believe there were still any left hiding inside.

Hughie’s apartment had an even worse infestation, so the rabbits had to spread out and search the apartment themselves.

The 17th floor was just as chaotic. Rumor had it that the giant cockroaches had chewed through several food bags, and Gabrielle had almost slipped while trying to kill one.

After giving it some thought, Nicole sent two rabbits downstairs.

She couldn’t send too many. There was no reason to draw unnecessary attention to what they had.

Besides, the rabbits could feed themselves anyway, so leaving them stationed on the 17th floor worked out perfectly.

Watching the rabbits tear through the giant cockroaches left Gabrielle speechless.

She had lived more than 60 years and thought she had seen everything life could throw at her, but this was something else entirely.

The help from Nicole’s group moved her deeply. 1

People kept calling them monsters, yet compared to the people hiding ugly intentions behind friendly faces, they were far better than most.

Trash continued piling up throughout the building, and the giant cockroach infestation had everyone on

edge.

Every time the radio came on, the authorities repeated the same warnings around the clock.

Keep your living areas clean. Dispose of trash properly. Do not leave garbage sitting out in the open.

There were empty apartments scattered throughout every building, so residents were told to seal their

trash inside containers and wait until the floodwaters receded before sanitation workers could enter the

complexes to collect it.

Otherwise, the smell alone would make life unbearable while attracting even more pests.

Some survivors listened.

Others continued doing whatever they pleased.

The giant cockroaches still spread through most of the building, but the 18th floor remained spotless. With the rabbits guarding the area, the pests gradually disappeared altogether.

The 17th floor improved as well, although Gabrielle’s balcony wasn’t enclosed.

A few giant cockroaches still appeared from time to time, but their numbers had dropped dramatically compared to the lower floors, where the infestation remained completely out of control.

Nicole started seriously wondering whether the creatures had developed some level of intelligence.

Had they realized the 17th and 18th floors were dangerous and decided to avoid them?

“I’m sure of it.”

Hughie sounded completely convinced. If rabbits could mutate, giant cockroaches becoming smarter didn’t seem all that impossible. 1

Jeremy agreed. Faced with overwhelming force, even the cockroaches knew when to back off.

Nicole nudged Zeph with her elbow. “What do you think?”

Zeph answered vaguely, “Nothing’s impossible.”

Late that night, Nicole drifted in and out of sleep when violent banging suddenly erupted from the living

room.

The noise startled her awake.

“Cola?”

Seriously, was the dog planning to keep everyone awake all night?

Cola barked furiously as he tore through the apartment like something possessed.

Nicole became fully alert and climbed out of bed to switch on the lights.

In the living room, Cola had something pinned against the couch. He bit down hard, slammed it onto the floor, then dragged it around violently beneath his paws.

Nicole swept her flashlight over the scene and froze.

A massive rat with glowing red eyes was pinned beneath Cola’s paws.

The thing must have never seen a dog before if it thought it could take Cola head-on.

Cola flew into a rage and tore into it almost immediately. He clearly had no interest in ending things quickly either. He kept biting it, letting it scramble away, then chasing it down again like a cat tormenting

a mouse
