The Apocalypse Survival Manual (Three Days Before Doomsday, I Stockpiled Billions) novel Chapter 273

Chapter 273

Nicole grabbed a flashlight and searched the apartment carefully.

She soon discovered the stainless steel mesh on the balcony had been chewed through, and even the edge of the glass beside it had a chunk missing. The rat had squeezed in through the hole.

She pulled out rat poison and scattered it around the opening.

Just as she was about to leave, she caught a faint smell in the air and noticed a wet patch nearby.

Huh… The dog had peed there.

Nicole almost scolded Cola for making a mess, but the words stopped before they left her mouth.

Cola had always been clean. He never relieved himself indoors.

Sure, people joked that dogs catching rats was sticking their nose where it didn’t belong, but Cola really could hunt rats. He was probably marking territory as a warning. 1

To test her guess, Nicole checked the rest of the apartment.

Sure enough, she found traces of urine near the kitchen balcony, inside the bathroom, and even in the

rabbits’ room.

Thankfully, her own bedroom was untouched. Cola guarded that area personally.

Thinking about how vicious the red-eyed rat had been, Nicole picked up the walkie-talkie and contacted Zeph.

“The red-eyed rats are here.”

Ever since they got together, they no longer switched their walkie-talkies off at night. Before bed, they usually spent a few minutes talking to each other.

Neither of them lacked batteries, so keeping the radios on meant they could reach each other anytime something happened.

Zeph slept lightly, and his reply came quickly. “Did it bite you?”

“No. Cola found it first.” Nicole frowned slightly. “They’ve gotten really aggressive. Even after Cola nearly tore one apart, it still fought back.”

Zeph got up and checked his apartment. The doors, windows, and balcony were all intact.

Hughie’s group had their walkie-talkies turned off, so Nicole had no choice but to knock on their door instead.

The three of them always slept like the dead. What if a rat started gnawing on them while they slept?

This wasn’t something to joke about.

In her previous life, plenty of survivors got bitten by red-eyed rats. Too many people died, and eventually,

the Black Death broke out. 1

If survivors hadn’t already been trapped indoors, and if the sudden natural disasters hadn’t drastically reduced the human population, the plague might have spread completely out of control.

Honestly, ever since Cola joined the 18th floor, he always sensed trouble first and warned everyone before danger arrived. Over time, people’s guard naturally lowered.

The reason the 18th floor could live so comfortably and peacefully had a lot to do with the dog.

The second Hughie’s group opened the door, Cola shot inside like a cannonball.

A loud crash erupted in the dark. Bottles and jars toppled from the table, and Hughie nearly grabbed Beatrice in panic.

The lights flicked on. Another red-eyed rat lay dead in Cola’s jaws.

Jeremy stared in disbelief. “Where the hell did such a huge rat come from? And why are its eyes red?”

Nobody answered him.

Even cockroaches had grown as thick as two fingers now. A giant red-eyed rat wasn’t that hard to

imagine anymore.

Cola strutted proudly around the apartment, inspecting every corner while leaving fresh scent marks

behind.

The three of them froze, then slowly turned to look at Nicole.

Nicole rubbed her nose awkwardly. “Red-eyed rats are afraid of dogs. Cola’s marking territory to protect

you guys.”

Dogs marking their territory with urine was nothing new to them.

Smelly or not, a little dog pee was far better than letting red-eyed rats invade their homes. Compared to that, the smell was not even worth worrying about.

Not only did they stop complaining, but they even started praising Cola for it instead.

“Cola, you’re amazing. Pee a little more.” 1

The dog grinned proudly.

Who else in the world got praised for peeing all over the floor?

After leaving Hughie’s apartment, Cola didn’t hurry home. Instead, he stood by the stairwell door without

moving.
