Chapter 294

Nicole quickly pulled two bathtubs full of water out of the storage space and shoved Zeph toward the bathroom.
“You stink.”
Ever since they got back from the ceramics factory, Zeph had been showering at Nicole’s place.
One rinse to wash off the grime, another to properly clean up from head to toe.
By the time he came out toweling off his hair, Nicole had already placed a glass of iced tea on the table
for him. 1
“How’s the car repair going?” she asked.
Zeph downed a few satisfied gulps before answering.
“Mine should be salvageable. The others depend on luck. Too many parts are damaged. We’ll have to strip pieces from other vehicles, then quietly scavenge more parts ourselves and see if we can piece together another working car.”
Nicole thought the whole process sounded exhausting. “Once your truck’s fixed, just repair one more for Jeremy’s group. That’s enough.”
Going out to strip abandoned vehicles for parts meant dealing not only with other survivors, but also with the deadly heat itself.
Heat exhaustion alone was dangerous enough, but heatstroke was what truly terrified people. Someone collapsed from it almost every day now.
Under current medical conditions, once severe heatstroke hit, most people simply never got back up.
Nicole’s storage space held four SUVS now. Unless something unexpected happened, they could each drive one and still have an extra left over. 1
Zeph saw things differently.
“The vehicles you collected are too new. Driving them around makes us stand out, and that’s not a good thing.” 1
Once Jeremy and the others left, only he and Nicole would remain on the 18th floor.
Ordinary survivors might not dare cause trouble, but gangs and organized scavenger groups were another matter entirely.
As conditions worsened, people would only become more ruthless. Nobody cared about morals anymore when survival was on the line.
To people like that, human lives meant nothing. People would do whatever it took to get what they
wanted

Zeph already had a plan. “Once my truck’s repaired, we should find an old cargo van and rough it up a little. Easier for transporting supplies or moving around without drawing attention.” 1
Nicole nodded. “Works for me.”
After discussing that, she brought up preparing supplies for Hughie’s group.
Their resources had long since merged together, and they had scavenged most things jointly, so naturally, they needed to discuss decisions together.
Zeph thought it over briefly. “Let’s try trading for what they need first. If we can’t find it outside and we still have extras, then we can give them some of ours.”
First priority was protecting the people he cared about most. Helping others only came after that, if they still had room to spare.
Nicole agreed completely. “I’ll head out tomorrow and see what the situation looks like first.”
She planned to make it quick and return early, but when she reached the department store, she discovered the trading street had not only shut down, but it had also relocated entirely.
The new market operated out of Liberty Square and only opened at night.
The weather had become too brutally hot. Ordinary people could only come out after dark now.
It wasn’t just civilians, either. Even many government-run factories had switched schedules, resting during the day and operating at night.
Nicole turned to leave when someone suddenly called out behind her.
“Hey.”
She stopped.
Seriously, Weasel worked harder than half the city.
He had shaved his head bald. Combined with his short, skinny frame and his T-shirt and shorts, he looked even scrappier than before.
“It’s really you.” Weasel grinned broadly. “I thought I recognized you. So, what are you shopping for this
time?”
Typical black market hustler. The moment he opened his mouth, he was already trying to make a deal.
Nicole didn’t waste time either. She handed him the list she had prepared in advance. “Can you get
