Nicole picked up the walkie talkie and called Jeremy and Hughie over to help move supplies.

They were already packing on their side, anyway. They planned to leave within the next couple of days.

“Nicole… Are you really not coming with us?”

People crossed paths, then went their separate ways.

Nicole waved them over to sit down.

“Back when we cleared out the office tower, we collected all those seeds. Other than the vegetable ones, none of them are useful to me. How do you guys want to split them?”

Jeremy spoke first.

“Seeds are valuable, but the three of us don’t know the first thing about farming. Giving them to us would just waste them. Besides, Zeph repaired two vehicles for us. You couldn’t trade enough supplies to make up for that.”

Hughie’s group unanimously decided to leave the seeds with Nicole and Zeph.

The two men forced out faint smiles, both looking a little emotional. “Nicole, when you finally grow rice and wheat someday, Hughie and I are coming back to beg for a meal.”

Nicole took a slow breath. “Deal. I’ll be waiting.”

Aside from the seeds, Jeremy had something else to leave behind.

He always thought farther ahead than the others. Halloway was only a little over 200 miles away, but the roads were packed with danger. 1

Over the past few weeks, more and more people had tried heading toward the base.

However, plenty got robbed before they ever made it. Even wealthy survivors with working vehicles weren’t spared.

Their cars and food got stolen, and some were beaten badly enough that they stumbled all the way back to Westbridge on foot. Their shoes wore through, and the scorching pavement left blisters all over their

medicine.

If they got robbed, too, this would be their last safety net.

Nicole stared at him in surprise. “You want me to hold onto it?”

Jeremy nodded. If they made it safely to Halloway, they could always come back for it later.

Even if they never did, Nicole had looked after them for nearly two years, and Zeph had taught them enough survival skills to stay alive. Leaving the supplies with them was hardly a loss.

Nicole didn’t refuse. “Alright. If you trust me with it, I’ll keep it safe. If you ever need it, come back and get

it.”

The group had finally learned to think long-term. They finally understood the importance of backup plans.

People had already been lurking nearby, waiting for the repaired vehicles to hit the road so they could

make a move.

There was no point dragging things out. Better to leave now than invite wolves to attack later.

The three of them packed through the night, then hauled over about 100 pounds of rice along with more than 100 pounds of sealed dog food.

Dog food lasted a long time and filled you up well. It was one of the best emergency rations available. If they never came back, Cola could still eat it.

Nicole carried out several pounds of vegetable seeds from her room.

“Rice and wheat are hard to grow, but vegetables are easier. You can trade them at the base later, or plant them yourselves.”

The seeds came from vegetables harvested in the black soil garden, far more than they could ever finish

eating.

As for the high-tech research seeds taken from the biotech facility, she had barely touched them. They were too valuable for research, and she never lacked vegetables anyway.
