Chapter 308

Gabrielle said thoughtfully, “If dried seafood’s cheap, grab us a few pounds. If it’s expensive, forget it.”
Nicole agreed immediately, then carried eight rabbits downstairs.
She also pulled several hundred pounds of dried feed from the storage space and left it in Hughie’s apartment. For the Goodmans, she left behind a full water tank.
“We collected it during the deep freeze,” she explained. “We probably won’t be back anytime soon, so you guys use it while we’re gone.”
After settling everything, she headed upstairs to pack.
Anything valuable went straight into the storage space. They only left enough furniture behind to make the apartment look lived in.
Zeph dragged out two large cardboard boxes. “Store these carefully.”
Nicole blinked. “What is it?”
“Bombs.”
Nicole nearly jumped. She quickly tore one box open and found more than a dozen crude-looking explosives packed inside.
These were homemade bombs.
At this point, she honestly wondered if there was anything Zeph couldn’t do.
Then, he carried out two more large boxes.
This batch contained sealed ceramic containers. A while back, they had scavenged supplies from an old ceramics factory, and Zeph had specifically taken several crates for himself.
Nicole originally assumed he wanted them as emergency toilets. Apparently not.
“These are Molotovs,” Zeph explained.
Good thing society had already collapsed. Under normal circumstances, they would both be looking at life sentences.
Nicole instantly felt even more secure with the extra firepower.
At the same time, Zeph reminded her, “There are groups collecting tolls along the roads. Bring some potatoes.”
Tolls.
Nicole remembered now. Sven mentioned it before, and so had Weasel. Armed groups had set up roadblocks near the coast. Apparently, they weren’t small-time operators either.

Nicole hated the idea of paying people off, but considering the purpose of this trip, she still packed several bags of potatoes just in case.
At 3 a.m., the alarm went off.
Zeph woke Nicole first, then got the others up. Everyone brushed their teeth, washed up, and changed into old dirty clothes.
Better safe than sorry.
Nicole unleashed her full disaster-movie makeup skills, making everyone look exhausted, grimy, and half- starved before forcing them into sweat-soaked clothes that smelled awful enough to be convincing.
Time to move.
Cola looked especially excited. Ever since the extreme heat started, he had basically been trapped
indoors.
Go outside during the day, and his paws would practically fry on the pavement.
The nights were still brutally hot, but at least the roads weren’t hot enough to burn skin anymore.
After heading downstairs, Nicole had Poppy and Cola wait off to the side while she quietly pulled a battered seven-seat van out of the storage space under cover of darkness.
Zeph had scavenged it earlier.
The outside looked like junk, but he had rebuilt almost everything important inside.
The air conditioning still worked, the windows were tinted for privacy, and even the tires had been swapped for heat-resistant ones built for rough roads.
To make room for cargo, he had removed the entire back row of seats.
Nicole spread cardboard and mats across the floor so Poppy and Cola could lie down comfortably in the
back.
Then, she pulled the curtains shut to keep anyone from spotting them and getting ideas.
To avoid unnecessary attention, Zeph drove without headlights and wore night-vision goggles instead.
The AC kicked on. They hit the road.
The sky was still dark, and the van crawled slowly toward the coast. Every now and then, dim lights appeared ahead on the road.
Other travelers.
The difference was that Nicole and the others had a vehicle, while those people carried everything they owned on their backs, dragging themselves forward with equal parts numb exhaustion and stubborn desperation to survive.
