Chapter 320
Sven’s voice came out of the darkness.
“Nicole? Zeph?”
Nicole and Zeph exchanged a look. What was he doing here at this hour?
Poppy moved on instinct, hiding anything that couldn’t be explained with impressive speed. Nicole swept the vegetables, chicken, pork, and the rest of the spread into her storage space, leaving only the seafood on the grill.
Once they brought Sven in, he kept sniffing the air. “Well, look at you two. Barbecue in the middle of all
this?”
Nicole led him up to the rooftop. “Want some oysters?”
That smell was hard to turn down. Sven lasted about two seconds before he gave in. “Yeah, alright. I’ll
take a few.”
Nicole opened a beer for him. “You didn’t come all the way here this late just to raid our dinner, did you?”
“Something happened,” Sven said. He took several long swallows of cold beer and let out a satisfied sigh. “Depending on how you look at it, it might be a serious payday. The question is whether you two
can catch it.”
A payday? Who would turn that down?
Nicole’s attention sharpened. “I’m listening.”
“You know Tomlinson Enterprise and Seaborn Base have been tearing at each other for a while now, right? In public, behind closed doors, every way they can.”
Nicole had heard rumors, but she hadn’t paid them much attention. She had come to the coast to stockpile supplies, not get dragged into someone else’s war.
“Seaborn’s been trying to swallow Tomlinson whole, but Tomlinson isn’t exactly easy prey,” Sven said.” The two sides have been stuck in a standoff. Then Seaborn got desperate and crossed a line. They grabbed Fred to force his son’s hand. That’s Jake.”
Sven took another drink before continuing.
“Turns out Jake’s got a temper, too. He hired a full security crew and forced his way in to get Fred back. The problem is, the old man’s legs aren’t good. During the escape, he fell and landed on a rusty nail.”
Anyone who had survived this long knew tetanus was not something to take lightly. The shot worked best within 24 hours.
But two years into the apocalypse, the pharmaceutical companies were gone, hospitals had fallen apart, and lifesaving medicine cost more than gold.

Tomlinson Enterprise had money. If it had been almost any other emergency medicine, they might have found a way.
A tetanus vaccine was different, however. It had to stay cold, between 36 and 46 degrees Fahrenheit. Once it warmed past that range, there was no guarantee it would still work.
Finding a usable dose now was close to impossible.
So Tomlinson Enterprise had started calling in every favor it had.
Sven thought his own network was decent, but after running himself ragged, he still had nothing. That was when he thought of Nicole.
“Tetanus vaccine?” Nicole looked genuinely surprised. “That won’t be easy to find.”
“Tell me about it. I’ve been chasing leads all over the coast.” Sven took another swallow of beer. “Do you two know anyone who might have a way in? If you do, move fast.”
Jake Tomlinson had a reputation for loyalty, and everyone knew he was devoted to his father. If they could get the vaccine, the reward would be significant.
Nicole nodded. “Since you came to us, we’ll ask around. But I can’t promise anything.”
“That’s enough. Just be quick.” Sven looked at her. “Can you give me an answer before eight tomorrow morning?”
He still had other places to check. After finishing his beer, he took a piece of grilled squid with him and
ate as he left.
Once he was gone, Nicole went back to grilling and storing food. She liked grilled squid, especially the tentacles, so she planned to put away plenty.
Zeph watched her for a moment, thoughtful. “You have tetanus vaccine?”
“I do.”
Quite a lot of it, actually.
Before the disasters, she had asked Jeremy to help her stock up. Later, when she cleared out the office tower, she had taken everything she could find there, too.
“Are you going to trade it?”
“No rush.”
She was still deciding what to ask from Tomlinson Enterprise in return.
They were already stockpiling fresh seafood and dried goods every day, and her storage space was well supplied. Coarse sea salt was even cheaper. Trading tetanus vaccine for any of that would be a loss.
