Chapter 323
The young man didn’t die.
The man beside him did. The bolt had gone straight through his heart.
He was in his fifties and hadn’t said a word the entire time, but Nicole had noticed the way the others kept glancing at him before making a move. The real leader had been easy to spot.
Someone shouted. “The mayor’s dead!”
The crowd erupted. People shouted and tightened their grips on their weapons, looking ready to rush her.
Nicole didn’t move. She tossed the crossbow onto the car seat, then bent down and pulled a submachine gun from her storage space in the same motion. Her finger settled on the trigger without a hint of hesitation. 2
“If you’re that eager to die, I’ll send you after him.”
Everyone froze.
None of them had expected someone driving a beat-up car to be carrying a submachine gun. They stopped so fast that they nearly tripped over one another, then stumbled back.
Nicole smiled coldly. “I don’t have many bullets, but I have enough for all of you.”
A moment ago, they had been shouting like they owned the road. Now, they backed away just as fast.
Against that kind of firepower, no one dared make another sound.
This woman was crazy! One second, she had been talking calmly. The next, she had killed a man without
blinking.
They had only wanted to rob someone for food. They hadn’t planned to kill, and they sure as hell hadn’t planned to die.
“Stop.”
Nicole’s voice cut across the road the moment she saw them trying to run.
The crowd froze.
Several people raised their hands in panic. “Don’t! Please don’t kill us!”
The timid ones shook so hard that their legs nearly gave out. A few even wet themselves where they stood. Not one of them had any trace of their earlier arrogance left.
Nicole said, “Move the rocks, then throw the body into the ocean.”
Terrified she would shoot, they scrambled to clear the road. After that, they dragged the body away and dumped it into the sea like she told them.

Only then did they scatter, fear driving them faster than anger could hold them back. They were afraid that if they ran even one step too slowly, that madwoman would gun them down.
Nicole got back into the car and put the weapon away.
She didn’t feel sorry for them.
She could tell hunger and desperation had pushed them into robbery, and she could tell they were beginners. They had no real experience yet.
Today, they had run into her and failed.
But what if they had met someone else? If they succeeded once, their courage would grow fast.
The first time was always the hardest. The second would be easier. After that, it wouldn’t take long for
them to become real monsters.
Aside from making trades, the three of them and the dog spent the worst of the heat inside the villa with the air conditioning running. When they were tired, they slept. When they were bored, they kept cooking and storing food.
Three days passed in a blur.
Sven came by in high spirits. “Fred is fine now. You can pick up the yacht tomorrow.”
On top of that, Jake had sent 3,000 pounds of dried goods as thanks for helping find the medicine.
Nicole was a little surprised. She hadn’t expected him to be that straightforward.
“Sven,” she said, “if you came all the way here yourself, I’m guessing there’s something else.”
Sven paused, then laughed. “Nothing gets past you, does it?”
There was something else. Another profitable job from Jake.
Sven explained why he had come.
“The disasters aren’t letting up, and the drug factories aren’t coming back anytime soon. Medicine’s only getting harder to find. You two found tetanus vaccine when it mattered most. That proves you’ve got
channels. Jake noticed.
“Fred is getting up there, and he has a few chronic conditions. His medication is getting harder to source, so Jake wants to stock up while he still can.”
With that, Sven handed her a list.
