Other than medicine, Nicole couldn’t think of anything important enough for Sven to come in person.

“It’s medicine,” Sven said, “but not for Jake this time. It’s for the director of Seaborn Base.”

Nicole frowned. Seaborn Base had never seemed trustworthy to her. “You’re helping them find medicine? Aren’t. you worried about crossing Tomlinson Enterprise?”

Sven shook his head.

“In this line of work, we stay neutral. Trade is trade. As long as the price is right, we don’t pick sides.

“Seaborn Base isn’t as decent as Tomlinson Enterprise, that’s true. But the bigger the group, the less likely they are to rob us outright. They have resources. It’s the smaller crews you have to watch out for.

“This is the apocalypse. There’s always risk. If you’re not comfortable dealing with them, then just pretend I was never here.”

Since he had already come all this way, Nicole couldn’t just brush him off. She let a hint of curiosity show. “What kind of medicine are they after?”

“Insulin.”

Insulin was used to control blood sugar. If someone still needed injections this far into the apocalypse, it meant they had a severe deficiency and would depend on it for life.

One pen held about 300 units. A patient with a full deficiency needed roughly 60 units a day, so a single pen would only last a few days.

Before everything fell apart, that might have been manageable. Now, it was something ordinary people couldn’t even dream of affording.

Sven didn’t waste time.

“Seaborn Base kidnapped Fred a while back. Jake hit back and took the base director’s insulin. Tomlinson Enterprise is too well guarded, so Seaborn Base can’t steal it back. They’ve been scrambling to find another source.

Nicole thought it over. “If he doesn’t get it soon, he won’t make it.”

Still, insulin storage had improved over the years. It didn’t always require specialized refrigeration anymore.

In other words, it wasn’t as rare as something like a tetanus vaccine. With the right connections, it could still be found.

Otherwise, the director would have died a long time ago.

Nicole kept that to herself. “Insulin isn’t easy to get. What are they offering? My supplier isn’t interested in small deals.”

“Jewelry, gemstones, seafood, grain. Anything along those lines. If you have something specific in mind, I can pass it along.”

Sven then made a subtle gesture.

None of that appealed to Nicole. She had a feeling her storage space was already close to its limit.

Even if it wasn’t, it was more than enough for now. She didn’t need to expand it again. Seafood was easy to get, she already had plenty of grain, and she could grow crops herself.

As for weapons, if Seaborn Base had anything truly powerful, they would have already wiped out Tomlinson Enterprise. They wouldn’t still be locked in a standoff.

Still, the two sides’ docks weren’t far apart. Nicole had observed them closely before.

After thinking it through, she finally spoke.

“Sven, we’ve worked together long enough, so I’ll be straight with you. My supplier does have some reach when it comes to medicine. Getting a few insulin pens for an emergency might be possible, but I’d have to confirm first

“If he can get it, though, what he’ll ask for won’t be something simple like a single yacht. If they’re serious about trading, I can ask for you.”

Sven considered it. Seaborn Base had more than yachts. They had several large fishing vessels, even a cruiser.

This was about the director’s life. They had already said they would pay whatever it took.

“That should work. If you’re sure you can get the insulin, I’ll talk to them about the terms. But it needs to be fast. They probably don’t have much left.”

Nicole nodded. “Alright. Since it’s you, I’ll have an answer for you tomorrow.”
