Chapter 328
Nicole shook her head. “We don’t know how to fish. A fishing boat wouldn’t do much for us.”
What she actually wanted was a cruiser, and Seaborn Base happened to have one. From what she had seen, it was in good condition and fairly new.
Zeph frowned. “We already have a yacht.”
Growing up in an orphanage doesn’t teach you everything, but it does make you learn to plan ahead earlier than most people.
Nicole was no exception. If anything, her instincts for danger were sharper than most.
“A yacht can keep us afloat, but if we run into a serious storm, or a quake shifts the plates and triggers a tsunami, one big wave could take it under.”
That was the reality. Seaborn Base had a bad reputation, and there was a real chance they might try to take the goods instead of honoring the deal.
Even so, Nicole thought it was worth the risk.
“If we lose, it’s just a batch of insulin. But if we win, we get a cruiser. If things ever get worse and land turns into ocean, that could be what keeps us alive.”
Seeing how firm she was, Zeph didn’t argue. “Then we plan it carefully and keep the risk as low as possible.”
His agreement put her in a much better mood. “You’re better in a fight. I’ll follow your lead.”
The flattery made Zeph both amused and a little pleased.
Nicole settled onto the couch, munching on snacks as they talked things through.
Zeph didn’t eat any, but he passed them over. They went back and forth on the plan until late before finally calling it a night.
The next morning, Sven showed up early. “So? Anything solid?”
Nicole hesitated. “There’s insulin. How much does Seaborn Base want?”
“For them, the more the better.”
Sven was sharp when it came to deals. He had already hinted at what Nicole’s side might ask for, guessing it would be either a fishing boat or a cruiser.
Tomlinson Enterprise had fishing boats as well, but Nicole hadn’t asked for one there. That meant she likely wouldn’t ask Seaborn Base, either. Most likely, she had her eye on the cruiser.
Sven had already run through the terms in his head so he wouldn’t have to go back and forth. He went straight to it.
“So which is it? Fishing boat or cruiser?”
“My supplier doesn’t take what people depend on to live. He wants the cruiser.”
Sven let out a quiet sigh of relief. In this environment, fishing boats were far more valuable than cruisers. They were what kept Seaborn Base running.
He had been worried Nicole might ask for one. Since this was medicine that could save their director’s life,

Seaborn Base would have to agree, but there was no telling what they might do afterward.
From what the base director had hinted, he had been hoping to trade the cruiser anyway. That lowered the risk a lot.
Sven relaxed a little. “The cruiser is fine, but they want 60 insulin pens.”
Nicole had that much, but no one gave everything. “It’s been almost two years since everything collapsed. Who can still come up with 60 pens? My supplier can get 30 at most.”
If insulin hadn’t been easier to find than vaccines, if Seaborn Base didn’t still have a chance to source more elsewhere, and if the cruiser hadn’t been worth far more than the yacht, she wouldn’t have offered this much.
Medicine was rare, and offering too much would only make people suspicious.
Sven thought it was a bit low, but this was life-saving medicine. Without it, the man would die. Thirty pens/ should buy enough time for them to find more.
