Chapter 337
In the end, life and death leveled everyone.
The wealthy residents had gone mad, but they underestimated the weight of the pod. It stood nearly ten feet tall and had been built for earthquakes and tsunamis. It was made from heavy materials, with a large capacity, and weighed several tons.
Still, enough people could move anything. The pod began to shift.
Then the second wave hit the mountain, and a wall of seawater swept across the rooftop and slammed into the pod.
The force sent it rolling backward, crushing everything in its path.
More than a dozen people failed to move in time, and the wave wiped the rooftop clean.
Those who survived the first surge barely had a second to react before another wave, even higher than the mountain, came crashing in.
The world went quiet.
People vanished like foam, leaving nothing behind.
The pod was carried away.
Because Poppy was with them, Nicole hadn’t wanted to use the storage space. The pod had been a backup.
She hadn’t expected the tsunami to be this overwhelming, cutting off every escape.
In that instant, with no other option, Nicole pulled herself, the others, and the entire pod into her storage space.
The noise disappeared.
There were no waves, no destruction. Only the quiet garden.
Nicole unbuckled her harness.
Cola rushed out through the hatch, then stopped short. The place felt familiar, yet not quite the same.
Zeph stepped out after him, carrying Poppy.
Nicole’s expression changed. “What happened to Poppy?”
“She’s fine. I gave her something to help her sleep. She’ll wake up after it wears off.”
“You…” Nicole looked at him. “How long?”

Zeph set her down on the bed. “Twenty-four hours.”
Twenty-four hours. That wasn’t a small dose.
Seeing the look on her face, Zeph explained, “There may be some mild side effects, but as long as it’s not used often, it won’t affect her health.”
Nicole felt a mix of emotions and didn’t speak right away.
Zeph spoke first. “Poppy is still young. She has a long life ahead of her. She’ll face things, meet people. I can’t guarantee she’ll always stay the same.”

People changed.

Zeph could only be responsible for himself. He couldn’t decide everything for her. He had to think about her future, and about Nicole’s safety. There had to be a balance.
Nicole understood. She stepped forward and hugged him lightly. “You’re a good man.”
Zeph held her. “We’ll be fine.”
After finishing his patrol, Cola stared at the two of them. His head tilted left, then right. Finally, he walked over to the bed and looked at Poppy, whining.
Nicole and Zeph pulled apart.
