Chapter 344

Almost at the same moment, Zeph moved. The man with the gun didn’t even register it before a red mark appeared between his eyebrows.
When Zeph acted, he finished it.
The pistol was fitted with a suppressor. He emptied the magazine, and seven men dropped at once.
Nicole, who didn’t even get a chance to make a move, was speechless. She hadn’t even shot her gun before the entire checkpoint was wiped out.
Zeph walked over to Poppy and wiped the blood from her face. “You’re okay.”
Poppy rushed into his arms, shaking all over.
Cola, meanwhile, was excited. He circled Nicole and wagged his tail, clearly looking for praise.
Nicole waved him off and sent him back to the car, then walked over to the truck parked by the road.
The tsunami had taken everything. Trade had slowed to almost nothing. They hadn’t gathered much today, maybe half a truck of dried seafood, coarse salt, potatoes, and sweet potatoes, a mix of odds and ends.
In the distance, a group of survivors was heading this way.
Nicole paused, then left the supplies where they were.
The guard booth held cigarettes, liquor, snacks, and a few barrels of clean water.
Nicole left the water, while Zeph collected their guns. The four of them then got into the car and drove off before the others arrived. 1
They were already back in Westbridge. The sun burned overhead, the ground cracked and pale, the heat thick enough to make your head spin.
Zeph turned on the AC.
Nicole found a clean set of clothes and handed them to Poppy, who still looked out of it, and told her to change.
She was only six or seven, and the world had already forced a knife into her hand.
Cola was sensitive to people’s moods. He nudged Poppy gently, trying to comfort her.
The car sped forward. It had only been a month, but Westbridge felt even more deserted.
Crownview Residences was the same. People had been leaving one after another, some heading to bases, others back toward the coast, all looking for somewhere safer.
The building felt hollow. Their footsteps echoed as they walked.
They climbed up to the 18th floor. Nicole pulled out a tub and had the two of them wash off the dirt.
While they were in the bathroom, she quickly brought out furniture. She and Zeph set the place up in a rush.
Westbridge was hotter than the coast. Even with an air cooler packed with ice and temperature-regulating clothes, they were still sweating. In the end, they had to bring out the AC unit.
Lunch was a spread of meat, soup, seafood, and vegetables.

Poppy stayed quiet, head down, barely eating.
After they finished, Nicole sent Zeph away and called her over. “Poppy, are you scared?”
Poppy twisted her shirt and kept her eyes down. “Nicole… I killed someone.”
Nicole crouched in front of her and rested a hand on her head. “First, we didn’t start anything, right?”
Poppy nodded.
“Things are different now. Staying alive comes first. We didn’t do anything wrong. Why should we let bad people hurt us or take our lives?”
“Okay.”
“They came after us. We were defending ourselves. If we hadn’t stopped them, they would’ve hurt more people. So no, you didn’t do anything wrong. You did what you had to. You got rid of bad people. That makes you brave.”
