“Okay!” Poppy nodded hard.

Nicole took out two ice cream bars from the fridge. “You and Cola did great today. This is your reward.”

With the tight knot in her chest finally easing, Poppy happily ate her ice cream.

Most of the building was empty now. Two of the units weren’t locked, so Nicole and Zeph could come and go.

Zeph walked over, shut the door, and lay down for a nap.

They didn’t go all the way, but in the quiet, he reached over and lifted the hem of Nicole’s shirt. 3

After their nap, Nicole carried 20 pounds of sea salt and 10 pounds of dried seafood down to the 17th floor.

When Gabrielle saw Nicole back safe, she sighed in relief. “There you are. We heard about the tsunami in Grayport. The city even sent rescue teams.”

“We got lucky. We left a few days early and looped through Ashmont before heading back.” Nicole handed the salt and dried seafood. “Brought you some. Let me know if you need more.”

Twenty pounds of salt would last a long time.

Gabrielle was happy, but ten pounds of dried goods was a lot. One pound of meat usually cost several pounds of grain. She hesitated, but she didn’t want to turn down Nicole’s kindness.

Gabrielle put the items away and went to unlock the grain cabinet. “Thanks for going through the trouble.”

Nicole stopped her. “Gabrielle, this is for you.”

“I can’t take that.” Gabrielle shook her head. “You bringing them back is already more than enough. I can’t let you take a loss.”

“You don’t need to pay me.”

They had been neighbors for almost two years. If Nicole offered, she meant it.

“If you hadn’t helped take care of the rabbits this past month, we couldn’t have gone out like that. We already got what we needed. This is just a thank you. We might need your help again later.”

Gabrielle held out for a moment, but eventually gave in. “Alright. If you need anything, just tell me.”

She started talking about the rabbits.

“After you left, they had a few more litters. There are over 20 more now.”

Curious, Nicole went over to Apartment 1702 to take a look.

The Goodmans had taken good care of them. Ash and Snowy hadn’t lost any weight.

Even after a month, the rabbits still recognized Nicole and crowded around her. They remembered who fed them, but they weren’t so friendly toward Cola. That stubborn streak was still there.

Cola pinned them down one by one with a few quick swipes, putting them back in line.

Nicole counted the new rabbits and turned to Gabrielle. “Can you raise them? If you can, I’ll give you a pair.”
