Chapter 353
Nicole arrived moments later and used the defensive position to drop one of them.
A dull thud followed, then a burst of sparks.
Cola let out a sharp, urgent bark.
It was a bomb.
Cola had carried explosives before. The second he caught the smell, he knew what it was and warned Nicole and Zeph.
Nicole’s eyes widened. She grabbed Zeph and pulled him toward the stairs. “Move!”
Instead of falling back, he rushed forward and kicked the explosive pack down the stairs with all his strength.
The three of them then sprinted upward.
A deafening blast shook the entire building.
The shockwave slammed into Nicole from behind and threw her forward. She hit the ground hard. Her ears rang, and the air filled with the acrid smell of gunpowder.
Glass shattered. Dust and chunks of ceiling rained down.
Her body wouldn’t respond. It took several seconds before she could move, and when she did, a violent cough tore
out of her.
Cola rushed over, whining, grabbing at her clothes and trying to drag her back toward the room.
Nicole forced herself up. “Zeph?”
Her ears were still ringing. She couldn’t hear anything. Smoke and dust filled the air, and she didn’t dare call out again in case anyone was still alive.
Fighting through the dizziness, she staggered toward the stairs. 1
Zeph had to be alive. He couldn’t be gone.
Cola grabbed her pant leg and pulled her back, then bolted down the stairs on his own.
Another explosion roared.
Pain stabbed through Nicole’s ears. She braced herself on the railing and pushed her way down. Through the haze, she thought she heard movement.
She chambered a round and raised her gun.
“Woof!”
Cola came into view, dragging Zeph by the leg, hauling him upward with everything he had.
He had found him.
Zeph was covered in dust, his face barely recognizable, but when he smiled, it was all teeth.
“I’m fine. I made sure they were dead.”

Nicole rushed over and wrapped her arms around him, holding on tight. Cola paused, then jumped in too, pressing against both of them.
Six had come. Four were shot, one was blown apart, and the last one had been finished by Zeph.
They were wearing body armor, so neither of them had taken a serious hit, but the blast had left them bruised and shaken. Most of the glass in the building was gone. Large sections of the 17th floor hallway and walls had been blown out, and part of the staircase had collapsed.
The building was done.
Ironvale Base had meant to take out the 18th floor. They had used enough explosives to do it. After a blast like that, the place wasn’t livable anymore and could come down at any time.
Back in the apartment, Zeph was about to wash up when Nicole stopped him.
“We made it. That deserves a picture.”
So they took one, both of them covered in dust.
Nicole was about to put her phone away when Zeph leaned closer. She sighed and took another.
Cola barked, clearly unhappy about being left out.
So they crouched down, pulled him into the middle, and took another shot.
Then Nicole frowned. Something was off.
