The Apocalypse Survival Manual (Three Days Before Doomsday, I Stockpiled Billions) novel Chapter 383

Chapter 383

It had been over half a month since the interview. Alex had assumed Nicole and Zeph wouldn’t come back, which left him a little disappointed.

He could tell the two of them were capable, and the community was short on people like that.

So when they showed up again, it caught him off guard.

After they drove into the complex, Alex personally took them to see the available units.

“We’ve got plenty of empty places. In Phase One, two buildings are fully finished, but the lower floors are already occupied. For safety and to avoid conflicts, we keep one household per floor and seal the fire doors. The higher floors are empty, so they’re quiet, just a bit hotter.

“Building Three in Phase Two was finished by us, so it’s a little rough, but there are still units open on the lower floors. Want to take a look at all of them?”

Nicole shook her head. “Mr. Landon, we have a dog. Living above or below other people isn’t ideal. We’d prefer a place with some separation. Could we see Buildings Four or Five?”

Cola weighed close to 90 pounds. If he was around people all the time, it would draw too much attention. If not for the earthquake that had devastated Westbridge and brought down most of the city, Nicole wouldn’t have considered a place like this.

Alex looked surprised. “Buildings Four and Five only have the exterior done. The interiors are still bare. They’re not really livable.”

Nicole didn’t back down. “That’s fine. We can handle the inside ourselves.”

Guessing what they were concerned about, Alex didn’t press. “Alright. Your call.”

He was about to lead them over when the radio crackled with urgency.

“Captain Landon! Captain Landon, those people are back trying to take the water source. There are more of them than last time.” 1

A series of sharp metallic clangs followed.

“Mr. Dawson, Ms. Floyd, both buildings are unlocked. You can go up and look around.” Alex’s expression tightened. “We’ve got a situation. I need to handle it.”

With that, he rushed off.

In this kind of heat, water was everything.

Without it, people couldn’t survive, and nothing could grow.

Oakhaven Gardens still had some undeveloped land, and the residents had been clearing it to plant sweet potatoes, using carefully rationed water. From the looks of it, the crops were close to harvest.

Some had even been living off the leaves, cutting them as they grew.

Nicole noticed several drought-resistant forage plants as well. A little water was enough to keep them alive. What used to be animal feed had become food for people.

It might be rough on the throat, but when chopped fine, it was still better than chewing bark or eating clay.

Nicole watched Alex’s retreating figure. “Do we check out the buildings, or go see what’s happening?”

Zeph thought for a moment. “Alex managed to organize a rescue team after the quake and hold this place together. He can probably handle it. But if we’re going to live here, it wouldn’t hurt to understand the people around us.”

Nicole gave a small smile and agreed.

They drove to the entrance, where both sides were already facing off. With water on the line, the tension was tight enough to snap at any moment.

Compared to last time, there were clearly more of them.
