The Apocalypse Survival Manual (Three Days Before Doomsday, I Stockpiled Billions) novel Chapter 390

Chapter 390

Over the years, both before and after the apocalypse, Nicole had built up quite a collection of books. With the two large bookcases she had taken from Felix, she finally had a place for them and spent some time pulling everything out and organizing it.

Medical books, psychology books, practical guides, children’s stories, classics, relationship magazines….and an unexpectedly large collection of adult reading material, which she quictly pushed aside without a second look

Felix really did have some questionable tastes.

During dinner, the city released an update.

Two private criminal bases near the Westbridge and Grayport border had clashed over territory and wiped each other out. Police had rescued 48 women and 9 children, all of whom had been held illegally. They would be relocated properly, and the investigation was still ongoing.

Authorities had also seized more than 60 thousand pounds of food along with other supplies, with the inventory still being counted.

They urged the public to stay alert and avoid joining private bases tied to criminal activity.

Poppy’s face lit up. “Nicole, they really got rescued!”

“They did.” Nicole ruffled her hair. “You had a lot to do with that. Looks like you ended up the hero again.

Poppy blushed. “You and Zeph did more.”

Cola let out a low whine beside them, clearly unhappy about being left out.

“You did great, too.” Zeph gave him a firm pat. “Carrying explosives and taking down a stronghold isn’t something just any dog can do.”

That was true. Taking out both Ironvale and Drakehold had depended heavily on the two little ones.

Felix’s people had been watching Nicole and Zeph closely, but they had overlooked what Cola and Poppy could do.

Without them, it would have taken much more effort.

As they ate, Nicole said thoughtfully, “Jasper’s sharp. He’ll know someone else was involved. Why keep the report so simple?”

“The city needs stability,” Zeph said. “As long as people get good news, that’s enough. If they told the whole story, it would only cause panic.”

They might not say it out loud, but the investigation wouldn’t stop.

Nicole frowned slightly. “Are we at risk?”

“No.”

Resources were stretched thin, communication systems were down, and a full investigation wasn’t realistic.

On top of that, most of Ironvale’s people had been burned beyond recognition. Even if survivors tried to describe what happened, it would come down to guesswork, especially since they had altered their appearances.

The police had too much on their plate. In a world like this, unless someone did something extreme, they didn’t have the time or manpower to chase every lead.
