The Apocalypse Survival Manual (Three Days Before Doomsday, I Stockpiled Billions) novel Chapter 394

Chapter 394

Nicole asked around and learned that a 16-ounce bottle of fresh water could be traded for one pound of sweet potatoes or regular potatoes.

That was the reseller price.

Some offered a full liter for just half a pound of grain, but the catch was whether you were willing to follow them somewhere private.

Nicole had water stored, so she hadn’t realized how severe the shortage had become. No wonder Oakhaven Gardens and the nearby towns were fighting over it.

There were also people selling seawater. Survivors lined up with containers in hand.

At first, Nicole thought it might be Sven’s operation, but when she pushed through the crowd, she realized they

were strangers.

The water was hauled from the coast near Grayport. With the two criminal bases gone, there was no more extortion or toll collection, so more people had started transporting goods.

Prices hadn’t dropped, but they hadn’t spiked either.

One pound of food could be exchanged for half a bucket of seawater, and the sellers would even demonstrate how to distill it into drinking water.

The method was simple. Boil the seawater, capture the steam, and condense it into fresh water.

There was no safety issue. The harmful substances in seawater either had higher boiling points or stayed dissolved, so distillation made it safe to drink.

The problem was efficiency. It was slow and burned through a lot of fuel, and along the coast, firewood wasn’t easy to find.

Survival was never simple. People were just getting through one day at a time.

Not long after entering the trading street, Nicole realized she was being followed.

Left, right, turn after turn, whoever it was stayed close behind.

She headed toward a quieter area, but the person suddenly picked up speed and tapped her on the shoulder.

Nicole reacted instantly, grabbing the arm and flipping them over her shoulder. A sharp cry followed, and she pressed a knife to his throat. “You got a death wish?”

“Nicole, it’s me. It’s me.”

The voice sounded familiar.

She switched on a flashlight and aimed it at the face.

“You?”

It was Weasel! 1

He really did turn up everywhere.

“Damn, it’s really you,” he said, stunned. “You’re alive.”

“No kidding. If I weren’t, I’d be back to haunt you.”

In any other place, she would have already cut him down. The fact that he was still standing meant he had gotten lucky.

“Why were you following me?”

She had gone out of her way to disguise herself, and he still recognized her.

“Seeing you alive is a relief,” Weasel said, scrambling to his feet. “Boss and I thought something happened to you.

After the tsunami, he had gone back several times to the area where they used to sell water, but he never found her. No one he asked knew anything, either.
