Chapter 399
To prevent heatstroke, supplies were distributed in two time slots, from 5 am to 7 am, and from 7 pm to 9 pm.
Zeph’s group was assigned the morning slot, so they were up a little after 3 am. Nicole coated Cola with a piece of
fried fish.
“Watch the house. Wait for us to get back.”
Cola whined, then steadied himself and agreed.
With packs on their backs and buckets in hand, the three of them reached the gate, where the rest of the group was already gathered, more than 70 people in total, including the elderly and children.
They had been uneasy, but the moment they saw Zeph and Nicole, it was like a weight lifted from them
Alex did a roll call, confirmed everyone was there, and led them out. After two years in the apocalypse, no one made a fuss. Flashlights cut through the dark as they moved forward.
No one complained. After all, Zeph had a vehicle, and he was walking right alongside them anyway.
The community center was a distance away. By the time they arrived, it was already 4.30 am, and the place was packed.
After organizing the line, Nicole, Zeph, and Poppy moved to a separate window to update their residency information.
At 5 a.m. sharp, distribution began. Police kept order. There were too many people, but no chaos.
Everyone was thin and exhausted, lips dry with thirst. No one had the strength to start trouble.
Oakhaven Gardens hadn’t arrived early. After an hour, it still wasn’t their turn.
By 6 a.m., daylight had fully broken. People grew restless, wanting to grab their supplies and get back before the sun climbed higher.
The heat wasn’t just intense. It burned. Skin reddened and itched within minutes, and even brief exposure could lead to blisters and infection.
Nicole estimated they had about 15 minutes left.
If they moved quickly, they could make it back before 8 a.m. Not ideal, but manageable.
Still, something felt off. The eastern sky should have been bright by now, but it looked dim and heavy. The air pressed down, thick and stifling.
She was about to say something when a sharp, rapid noise tore through the air.
Thuds followed, fast and violent.
Then, the screaming started.
Nicole hadn’t even processed it when pain exploded in her shoulder.
“Move, it’s hail!” Zeph shouted, grabbing her and pulling her toward the building.
Hailstones slammed down from above, some the size of quail eggs, others as big as fists.
In the scramble, Poppy stepped on one and slipped, her body pitching forward.

Zeph had her arm. If she had fallen, she would have been trampled. He yanked her back up and pushed forward with Nicole, forcing a path through the crowd.
Panic spread. People surged toward the building, packing it tight in seconds.
Zeph’s group wasn’t far, and he reacted fast. They made it inside.
