Sven had his people start loading the goods onto the truck. Nicole arranged to deliver the water the next night.

Given their history, Sven agreed without hesitation. “I’ll look into the iodine tablets, but they’re not easy to find. It might take some time.”

“That’s fine. I’ll trade grain when you have them.”

The mention of grain gave Nicole another idea. “By the way, can you find grain seeds? Ones we can harvest and replant ourselves.”

She still had a few hundred pounds of hybrid rice seeds in storage. They might have research value. She didn’t want to waste them.

“It’s been two years,” Sven said. “Those kinds of seeds are hard to find now. Even if you do find them, there’s no guarantee they’ll sprout.”

Nicole started the truck. “Do what you can.”

She drove off, stopped somewhere secluded, and stored the water tanks. The rest she took back to Oakhaven Gardens in plain sight.

After delivering Sven’s half truck of water, she stopped going out at night. It looked like she spent her days resting, but in reality, she was turning soil inside the storage space, planning to plant it all with corn.

Zeph and Poppy kept busy too. Aside from training every three days, they dug up soil from the empty land below and carried it up to the terrace.

With the steel door installed and the shade canopy in place, the setup was starting to come together.

Poppy broke up clumps of dirt and filled the planting trays. “Nicole, what are we planting?”

Nicole smiled. “What do you want to grow?”

“Sweet potatoes, peanuts, vegetables, green beans, and mushrooms!”

“Mushrooms won’t work,” Nicole said. “It’s too hot. The rest we can do.”

She brought out some seeds and had Zeph walk her through the basics.

Except neither of them really knew how.

In the end, Nicole had to show them herself.

Planting wasn’t complicated. Keeping anything alive in this heat was the real challenge.

As they worked, the city broadcast continued with earthquake safety instructions. Nicole glanced at Poppy. “Did you understand all that?”

“I did. Zeph explained it, too.”

Nicole tested her. “So what do you do?”

“Grab the emergency bag, take water and food, leave the building right away, and go somewhere open. Don’t stay in crowded or dangerous places…”

Before she could finish, the community loudspeakers came on.

“Poppy, are you scared?”

A little. But with Zeph and Nicole around, it didn’t feel overwhelming.

After training, Zeph drank the watermelon juice Nicole handed him. “We need to register our residency at the community center tomorrow. Alex asked if I could escort some residents.”
