Chapter 41
Beatrice didn’t say anything.
That actually sounded scary as hell.
The next morning, Nicole was still sleeping in when someone knocked on her door.
Beatrice called from outside, “Jeremy finished a whole bottle of vodka last night. He passed out hard, but this morning, he’s like a new person. He wants you over. Says there’s something to talk about.”
When Nicole got there, Jeremy had already changed, shaved, and cleaned himself up.
He looked a lot more put together, but his expression was serious.
“I think… This is the end of the world,” he said.
Nicole’s chest tightened. She glanced at him without saying anything.
“Don’t you think something’s off?” Jeremy sat up straight, his tone steady as he started laying it out.
“That typhoon was like nothing we’ve ever seen. And the rain… It’s like the sky just split open.
“I heard a lot at the shelter. The government’s been pulling supplies out of flooded wholesale food markets day and night. The bread and sandwiches we’ve been eating? That’s all from what they salvaged.
“Even if we stopped farming completely, the government is supposed to have enough reserves to feed everyone for two years. So why are they digging up spoiled food from the water to give us? And only enough to keep us half full. The rest they’re drying and storing.”
Hughie frowned. “It’s been raining nonstop. There’s no way to transport supplies in.”
Jeremy shook his head. “Don’t underestimate what the government can do. If this was just the southern coast, aid would’ve already arrived. Unless…”
This wasn’t local. It was nationwide. Maybe even global.
Before the network went down, Jeremy had been following the news and browsing forums. Other states were getting hit just as hard.
Disasters everywhere at the same time.
It sounded exactly like the apocalypse.
Even if the floodwaters went down someday, things wouldn’t bounce back anytime soon. That explained why the government was rushing to recover and store whatever supplies they could.
Hearing him lay it out like that made Beatrice and Hughie uneasy.
“People have been going out to salvage stuff these past few days,” Hughie said. “Should we try our luck, too?”
Jeremy turned to Nicole. “What do you think?”
“The water’s too deep,” Nicole said without hesitation. “Even trained divers would have a hard time. Regular people without gear don’t stand a chance. Even if you get lucky and find something, there’s no guarantee you can bring it back. We should think about this differently. Focus on what’s still above water.”
“But the stores have already been cleared out,” Hughie said. “There’s nothing left for us.”

“It doesn’t have to be food,” Nicole said. “As long as we have something others don’t, we can trade for food later.”
Hughie got it. They had to move early and get ahead of everyone else. But…
“Like what?”
“Medicine,” Jeremy said. “Everyone’s looking at grocery stores or diving underwater. We go for office buildings instead.”
Office buildings didn’t usually stock much.
