Chapter 42

There was no time to waste. Hughie went over and knocked on Zeph’s door.

When Zeph heard they were going out to look for medicine, he thought it over for a moment, then agreed.

It was the same setup as before. Beatrice stayed behind with Poppy to watch the base.

Even though Jeremy had laid out his theory about the apocalypse, Beatrice still had her doubts. Deep down, she didn’t want to believe it.

After hesitating for a while, she finally said, “This trip, focus on survival supplies and medicine. As for anything else… If you need it, that’s up to you.”

She didn’t spell it out, but everyone understood.

Nicole picked it up right away. “If it’s medicine or survival stuff, we split it evenly. Anything personal doesn’t count, but don’t use too much of the group’s resources.”

It was better to say it clearly.

No one objected.

They had one assault boat and three rafts. They could carry a lot back. The only concern was others getting there

first.

Jeremy’s company was about 12 miles away. The four of them climbed onto the boat and pushed forward through

the rain.

They had guessed right. The farther they got from the city, the more unpredictable the water became. The wind picked up, too. Even a skilled person wouldn’t be able to control a regular boat or a raft out here.

But Zeph handled it well, steering them steadily through the tangled waterways.

Through the gray, heavy sky, they finally saw several tall office buildings rising out of the floodwater.

Jeremy pointed the way, and they headed straight for it. Through the fifth-floor windows, they could see offices submerged in water.

“Everything looks untouched,” he said. “Probably hasn’t been looted yet.”

They smashed the glass with a hammer, and water rushed inside.

Once the current settled, they climbed in and secured the boat.

They got lucky. The entire building was still untouched.

With no time to waste, they took the stairs straight to the 12th floor, where Jeremy’s company was.

Using bolt cutters, they snapped the lock. Jeremy rushed to his workstation and let out a relieved sigh when he saw several large boxes stacked behind it.

“These were supposed to go out to a pharmacy,” he said, “but the typhoon hit, and they delayed delivery. So I brought everything back here.”

The shipment was mixed. It had antibiotics, disinfectants, joint pain meds, and cold medicine. Dozens of different types.

The company wasn’t big. The sales department only had about a dozen people.

The showroom had even more, such as pressure meds, blood sugar meds, and cholesterol meds. The quantity wasn’t huge, but there was a wide variety. They filled several big boxes just from that.

“We don’t have much space,” Nicole said. “Let’s ditch the packaging and just take the meds. We’ll save a lot of room.”

“Works for me,” Jeremy said. “I know what everything is. I’ll sort it out later.”

They started tearing open boxes and stripping packaging.

Nicole moved past the desks, grabbing whatever she could. She got coffee, crackers, snacks, pastries, tea, and boxes of instant mac and cheese. There wasn’t much, but she took everything useful.

The break room had more, such as drinks and bottled water. They grabbed it all.

Even the packages sitting at the front desk weren’t spared. If it had any use, they opened it and took it.

Anything they didn’t need went quietly into Nicole’s storage space.

They stuffed the medicine into two large hiking backpacks, each about three feet tall, packed tight.
